Sounds like Niterider has the answer.

 

With the thin blade you can wedge it in between the pads, and press on the brake lever.  After releasing there should be sufficient space for your wheel to fit back in.  If not, do the exercise a few times (maybe using a thicker blade).  The idea is to use the pads' force onto a flat surface to release them.

 

And you can break your finger in your nose as well...

Simple solution to a simple problem... Not overhauling the brake system...:-)

 

Lets face it, advice from a Rookie that had a problem like that.  Will not be able to solve the problems of the world...

 

PS: we live for downhills... and the faster the better...
