call me slow if you want to, but I do not know what the terminoligy and the technical jargon is for when it comes to tubeless tires on Mtb. And I am talking the whole deal here. Rims, for eg. when are they Tubeless, UST compatable and whatever type there is.

Is there someone who can supply quality information on this subject please?

You can go Tubeless with just about any rim.

1). If your rim has spoke holes through the rim then you must do a tubeless conversion, using Stans, etc, this kit will give you rim tape and sealant. The rim tape covers the spoke holes in the rim and makes a tight seal with the tyre, th tyres can be tubeless or not.

2). If you have UST or tubeless rims, ie. no spoke holes through the rim then you just need a tubeless tyre and sealant to go tubeless. You can also use non tubeless tyres here with sealent (cheaper option).

Simple really.

Ja, but I am slow remember.

What is the difference then between a tubeless and non Tubeless tire with slime. Maybe I am really dof, but it sounds like both require slime!!?

Yeah, both require slime to seal the gap between the tyre and the rim tape or rim.

Tubeless tyres have a thicker sidewall and are a bit heavier, therefore more durable.

Non-tubeless tyres can go tubeless no problem but some leak air a bit easier as the tyre compound is a bit different.

L'Bie,

UST rims don't have spoke holes. You only need to fit a valve to the rim.
UST tyres have rubber coating inside to hold air.
UST Rims + Tyres will hold air, and you can ride without any sealant.

(however you will have no puncture/pinch protection etc, so most people will put latex sealant / slime in anyway)

Tubless Ready Rims and Tyres are usually designed for systems like Stan's/Joe's/Eclipse where you use a rim strip + valve, and tyre sealant.

Normal rims / Tyres are designed to use tubes.
These can in many instances be used with rim strips / sealant, ( a bit of trial and error as to what combinations work). Usually the "normal" tyres have thinner sidewalls than UST tyres, so they are lighter, and as a result more prone to leaking and/or punctures.

Even I can understand this. Thank you!

It brings up another question though. If the rim doesnt have Spoke holes, then how id the spokes attached?

The UST rims (on the left) are manufactured with an insert (or some similar double wall method) so that the spoke goes in the rim like normal, but it does not go through the second layer/wall.

the bike I'm looking at buying has UST rims, but comes with standard Crossmark tyres.

Is it better to upgrade to UST tyres?

What are the other options in this case?
