Time to fess up...I have actually ridden the SBR in the opposite direction. But this was a long time ago' date=' and mid week. That twisty descent is hard when climbing, but its over fairly quickly. But sadly never did the Cheetah loop descent as a climb. I reckon its a tough one.

He's probably not going to be able to tell you exactly.

First time there we rode 2:15, but we unknowingly did not do the cheetah loop, and came down the descent we start on.smiley11.gif

So I think it was about 2:15 or something, this time round the poor guy also had to slow down a lot and wait for me, and we rode about 2:35.

If he had to do one loop, no stops, slowing down and waiting, he'll do close to a 2:20ish, or faster. Afterall he did ride the Argus this year in 2:27 or something, so the boy is no slouch at all. Must frustrate the living daylights out of him to ride with me

Andy, if you got to the reserve, I think its well worthwhile to do the full loop. I find laps very boring but that's just me.

 

Preferable to do the whole circuit and maybe add a bit of extra on at the end by redoing the cheetha loop.

Then I think I will do the Full Loop. Maybe at full gas.

Argus time this year was 3:27.

 

Saturday riding time I got 2:28 for full loop and cheetah loop. That first climb I rode in 10:56. But I think I could go much faster on that on the climb.

 

It doesn't frustrate me at all. In fact I enjoy it. Keeps me riding at a steadier pace than if I was by myself.

Welcome Andy, perhaps I should have added a smiley2.gif to my comment about being a showoff. Having met you and ridden with you more than once, I think you are anything but.

 

Now, me on the uvva hand Darren. BEEEEG showoff, loadmouth ijit, but hey, this is me.

 

For instance, went out for a training ride yesterday arvie. Going along Swartkoppies toward Hennie Alberts, a truck came past, just fast enough to interest me in a chase. (Inteval training). So i jumped in and it was fun for a short while until we stopped at a traffic light.

 

Then for the next section I ride solo. Same truck was stopped at the next red light and we caught up. When the light changed, we (Teeny) and I raced off. Not long and the same truck came past again and at that tantelising speed that said "You can do it. Jump in."

 

I have never been one to refuse my terrible twin (alter ego) while seated on my bike and this was not going to be the first time. So I jumped in. Motorpaced him all the way to Rietvlei and chickened out when I saw on my speedo that I was doing 70.

 

All in all though, I had a great session on the bike and that "motor pacing" was a major rush.

 

Was one of my most enjoyable rides ever.

FOFLMFAO at you two (Kid and Trubie).

 

Yeah, Kid, I said I was getting slower and needed to work on my speed and intervals. Motor pacing sure is a rush and a fun way to do an interval. 70 is incredibly fast but relatively easy when you are behind a truck. I was amazed that I was actually able to do it for as long as I did. Nuts I know, but it was great fun (only because I kept the rubber side down and didn't hit any potholes or other road debris.)

 

So I had one very fast interval. The rest of the ride I just pushed as hard as I could for as long as I could.

 

When I got home the stats showed that I actually managed to get to 74.

 

Ave speed for my 32 k ride was 32 kph. 59 min 23 sec.

 

Best speed interval I have ever managed and I needed a truck to do it. I quite surprised myself with that episode. Never knew I could chase to that speed before. Pity I got too nervous to continue.

 

Impressed the heck out of the houts on the back.

 

Remember how Trubie and GOv2.0 motor paced / chased that truck the day we did that cheese factory loop? I only hung on for all of 30 seconds while they went a lot further.

 

 

Now if only I could do that by myslef or if I could do it for llonger. That would be great.

But that is good. Sounds like a good training session! What has your speedometer reached on the descent in SBR?

 

I was thinking that while I am riding at SBR on Sat I will profile a few of the climbs to get length, gradients etc. So which climbs do you think are the major ones.

Starting at N3 side and going round (put in some landmark names so that the route can be followed) I get the First Ascent (climb 1) then there is the Descent, the Dam, the Game Catchment (when I rode with Trubie the first time ther was some sort of game catchment going on in that area, hence the name), the Horse Shoe, Long Drag (climb 2-Think it is about 6%), Twisty Flats, Forgotten Hill (climb 3-named because Trubie forgot about it this last Sat), Karrekloof Gate, Bridge Mountain (climb 4), Final Climb (climb 5) and Cheetah Loop. Any other climbs worth mentioning/profiling?

Yeah Andy, I frequently set myself up for a smack and I deserved those two.smiley18.gif No problem though, it's all good fun here. Light hearted tongue in cheek stuff.

 

Max speed recorded in SBR was 73.5 going down that long decent on the Cheetah loop. Got 69 next time out and 72 as max on our last SBR ride.

 

Sounds like you have most of the angles and climbs pretty much covered. Delgado and Muxman would probably have the best intell on SBR since they have done it far more often than either of us.

 

I have only done three tours there. Will be very interesting to see the route profile, get a sense of the vertical climb and all that stuff.

 

Other than the three or four major climbs, there are a few other speedbumps that we pay scant attention to since we are so focussed on worrying about the next big one.

 

That climb away from the dam is quite an unassuming climb that does bite a little. On almost any other training route one would notice that as a hill. In the context of SBR overall though, it loses a lot because of the other climbs.

Slave now for the bad news.... 1 repeat does not equate to interval training smiley6.gif

 

Intervals should be consistant, repeatable (preferably sub-maximal, except if you are training for short track races) effort with a rest period (interval) between each consistant repeat smiley1.gif

 

Try and make the last one faster than those before smiley2.gif Even better: make each faster than the previous one (negative splits) smiley20.gif

 

However {/lesson}, great for the confidence (and cadence - what gears ratio where you using? 53x11?) to go at that speed. It does redefine the possibilities for the body, doesn't it?

It certainly opened my eyes to the realm of what is possible and what I previously believed impossible.

 

Before, any speed over 60 and I stopped pedalling. It was simply too fast for me. Usually, those sort of speeds are only attainable on mine shaft type decents for me anyway. Swartkoppies was slightly downhill but what I found more interesting was that I could accelerate to get into the slip and then hold it.

 

My previous efforts were mostly a disaster because after the initial acceleration, I was too popped to be able to hold it for more than 10 seconds once I found the slip.

 

Also, I was quite happy that even after accelerating, and then holding the speed (albeit in a vacuum), I was not absolutely finished after I had pulled out of the slip. If anything, fear got me to give up the chase. Fear of the consequence of face planting at that speed or anything that could possibly have gone wrong causing me to crash.

Especially after the high speed Jens Voigt crash yesterday?

 

Regular riding/training does help! Keep the interval stuff for closer to the 94.7 and you'd be able to surge with the bunches smiley2.gif

 

Next mission: leave the nicotine sticks in the shops... smiley4.gif Or has that been accomplished already?
