Andy doll,it is time to accesorize that bike of yours with new wheels! do you only have one pair? if you only have one pair we need to go shopping doll! what wheels do you ride now that are broken?

Well I still got my spare bike, a Trek (Ultegra with heavy Bontrager wheels), but if you going to take me wheel shopping then it is impossible to say no! ;) But shopping for wheels will be thirsty work so we going to have to get a Martini, or whatever your drink of choice is, afterwards. :D

Current wheels are Easton EA90 Aero's. Great hubs though!

A new pair of wheels would be nice, I'll admit that and quite possibly necessary as second set.

stupid question but what are the best wheels? seriously?

same answer as what is the best bike?

million answers and opinions

depends on the individual

different strokes.......

I like Mavic, Bontrager, Hed, Zipp, Campag.........

a wheel is a wheel , just like a bike is a bike

my carbon bike rides just as fast as my alu bike

Would imagine the best wheels would be "Lightweight" but you going to need a very giving dad to buy those.

There are plenty of decent brands around, Andy just bought the worst.

Get him some Campag bling

ok really, maybe i am doff. are you seriously saying that the panarama shop broke your wheel? Or am i just being caught up in the sillyness?

No, actually what Andy is saying is that he blames the south for the wheel problem he had, when technically, he exposed his spokes to some rather harsh treatment the day before with his hard interval session. So what happened is that his spokes were tired (metal fatigue) and they just happened to snap the day he came south for his ride. This is of course over and above all the SBR rides, high intensity training rides. Climbing Killimanjaro and other mountains like Krugersdorp hill. Spokes only last so long dude. Eventually, they too get tired.

This is however, open to interpretation, supposition and conjecture. We only have his word and being a legal beagle, I would say that this is suspect to begin with. How else do lawyers defend the guilty other than by manipulation of the facts and the truth?

He has lied before by stating quite categorically, that there are only two climbs in SBR, when quite clearly, there are more. I know of at least four difficult climbs and have lost count on the easy ones. Once again, open to interpretation, supposition etc. :P Nancy has not been available for comment or to substantiate the story. For all we know, our Andy may have overslept and spun us the wheel story as a plausable alternative.

Last year some time, Oxman came out south for a ride and his spokes (2 of them if I recall) were broken when he arrived. Something to do with the way the bike hangs on the back of the car and the high speeds he managed to achieve to get here on time. ;)

Honestly, I ride on both the northern roads (through Houghton and Killarney) as well as a lot of the roads in the south. There are even some very dodgy areas of the CBD through which I am forced to venture on my regular commute and the road quality is equally bad on both sides of the railway line. I have met up with many at Panorama and have even ridden to the flea market next door and never had a problem.

Then again, on a perfectly smooth road like Swartkoppies, I have had the odd spoke let go on me while attempting a new land speed record to make it to Xumbugs on time for the bunch rides.

Metal fatigue happens. I just cannot fathom that the wheels have to go to Cape Town to be fixed. We have Johann Bornman here in our own back yard. (He's like the mechanical guru on the hub)

Andy, you know why they call it the mother city? Because it takes them nine months to do anything down there. Hope you have a spare set of wheels for this coming weekend. I think it will be a long while before you see those gorgeous Eastons of your again. :P

Eventually, they too get tired. Not the South, Kid!!! But obviously in a joking way. It was probably just normal metal fatigue. It was a different spoke to the one that broke in the race.

How else do lawyers defend the guilty other than by manipulation of the facts and the truth? We don't manipulate the facts and the truth, that would be unethical and a breach of our duty to the court. All one needs to do, in a criminal case, is create reasonable doubt and in a civil case show on a balance of probabilities that your version is most likely. Civil is a lower standard of proof.

For all we know, our Andy may have overslept and spun us the wheel story as a plausable alternative. There are only two climbs for me. As you said, it is open to interpretation. So according to my categorisation of the climbs there are only two. The rest are easier so not worth really mentioning. I count two and "have lost count on the easy ones" ;) Nance will substantiate that we were there and that we had breakfast at the Mugg & Bean.

Sorry to break the spoke thread here...

I need to do between 3 and 4 hours of cycling on Sunday (LSD stuff)....

Who has any ideas on how to do that, and still incorporate the loop with Nance (YEP SHE WILL BE THERE), and Slave?

What time does the sun rise in the Souff? Is there an option for an early loop (not at race pace)?

Or should I take the MTB and go round and round at Rietvlei after the roadie loop? Anybody?

Sunrise will be at 05:15 but civil twilight begins at 04:50. Agteros, maybe meet at Panorama and do a loop of some sort before meeting the main group? Kid, you keen to join us?

Ox. I am all out of LSD but I have some other good sh!t we can maybe smoke. (Oh cr@p, wrong thread.) ;) Unless you have a good recipe for cookies. Maybe we can put some speed into the cookies. ;)

There are some other guys that leave Xumbugs at around 5 am. If you read one of Trubies earlier posts, then it seems like they are real speed demons. Going up the steps at an average of 34 km an hour is like really hectic stuff.

As for doing some LSD, I do enough of that during the week. Commute about 300 k's a week at the mo' so short loop at low speed is ideal for me on Sunday. That should account for about an hour and a half, maybe.

The rest, well, maybe not a bad idea to take the MTB and go for a ride around Rietvlei afterwards. Unless you want to do multile laps of the short loop and I'll stand around and hurl abuse at you every time you ride past. :D ;)

Maybe one day for fun,I should arrange a hub ride from Alberton to Melrose and back, just for fun.

The last few days I have been going over the ridge on Munroe Drive as opposed to up Joe Slovo. Less traffic and a shorter climb. More intense, but much shorter. Now maybe all I need to do is climb Camaro instead of Butchers. Only problem here is after Camaro, one still has that little hump up past the Island Caltex. After Camaro, that can be rather nasty.

Andy, is not the "creation of reasonable doubt" manipulation of the facts? Technically speaking of course. Beating up the poor witnesses and making them believe that they have no idea of what the facts really are? Figuritively speaking of course. :P

Just one more question. When you are done waiting for those Eastons to find their way back from the mountain, and you have gone out and bought those new wheels, would you be so kind as to pass them onto me? I will give them all the love and attention they deserve. I will honour and cherish them and forsake all others until catasrophe us do part. I just have to convert them to Shimano. :)

You okes are nuts. Really. I may be unstable but at least I can blame my tyres.

Oh and Sunrise is the same time down south as it is up north. Only changes radically if you go as far south as Cape Town. Or as far west as Namibia.

I was going to give Andy all sorts of Jibe about sunrise time since he was so specific about it. ;)

According to Accuweather, Sunrise on Sunday will be at 05h14. Pretty much the same time as Randburg and Rivonia.
