I've got a set of 420's that came on my Dale that I bought in 2004. This bike gets ridden SUPER rarely, maybe 15 times a year. I've broken one spoke in the backwheel a year or two ago, which I'll accept because it happens every now and then. However, I've broken 4 spokes on the frontwheel, and all on the same side of the wheel. The last two broke now during the DC, the first one wheeling through Barrydale, and the 2nd one while sitting in the saddle going up Tradouw. Is it just me or is something fishy...?

Anyone had similar experiences?

Yeah, mine use to break all the time, then I'd just replace the broken spoke, this went on for quite a while, finially I broke like 6 one day and desided to respoke the whole wheel, since then no broken spokes in the last year and I ride then every day.

Ja, ek dink aan 'n respoke. Probeer net uitfigure as ek sterker speke moet vat of is dit wat nou daar in is net gemors. Jy weeg omtrent selle as ek(?), watse speke het jy gebruik?

Ja wat, so 73kg - ek het die swart DT Swiss Spokes gevat. Seker die Compititions want hulle was die cheapste. Maar ek dink nie die spoke maak saak nie, solank die "build" goed is behoort dit nie te breuk nie.

It has nothing to do with the spokes and everything with the build. If the builder (the factory) doesn't understand stress relieving, it/he/she cannot build proper wheels. ACs are notorious.

Those spokes are now all damaged from metal fatigue and will all break sooner or later.

Rebuild with double-butted (not cheaper straight gauge) and find a wheelbuilder that understands the concept of stress relieving the wheel.

The problem with ACs is that they also use a proprietary nipple which requires an odd spoke length. Convert them to standard nipples and new spokes.
