New Maximum Heart Rate

Max HR is not really very important, and definitely is not a predictor of performance. There are also many variables that determine what your HR will be, like nutrition, climate, stress levels, fatigue, fitness etc.

MAx HR has been shown to decrease with age, this however is not always true. If you are a bit older, the training you do will cause your HRmax to stay higher than the expected 220 - age.

Then again, endurance training could decrease HRmax.

If you want to work out HR training Zones, it is much better to do it by determining your LActate turnpoint.

If you constantly get high readings, then that is probably your max.

Certain interverances such as power lines etc may cause false readings, so check that it makes sense that your max was in the part of your workout that was hardest.

Aslo ensure that your sensor is clean, if not it may lead to false max values.

"Highest readings were obtained on the backstraight before the bottom bend. "

I would be carefull with straight away accepting this as your new max. Physical influences that I have picked up is wind flapping your shirt against the strap' date=' as well as vibration from corrugations in the road. Both of these tend to make my HR go where I know it cannot go.

Thuggie, I think Jaco might be onto something here, the bottom of the back straight is the fastest section of the course but also the least strenuous so not the most likely place to have highest HR.

Could be the wind flapping your shirt and the strap is not tight enough. Try tightening the strap and make sure it is lubricated at next weeks crit.

The Substation is near the highest point so not likely to have caused a bad reading.

As I said earlier, will see what happens next week.

As a side note, coming from a running background, ones highest HR reading is not necessarily at the time of your highest exertion but as soon as one starts to relax. So that could account for the high HR's on the back straight.
