Thanks Johan' date=' all good info this. Although I think the point is that a poorly built wheel, ridden HARD, will give way to big forces far more easily than gran's wheelchair (unless I push her down the stairs, which I often do)

[/quote']

Granted, but that was not our point of departure.

To sum it up then' date=' I had my wheel well built, for under R500, this year, locally, and it's still going strong. It didn't take 3 hours either. It took 1 hour.

[/quote']

Under R500 doesn't tell us much, it could have been R499-99. An Indian builder perhaps?  Wink

Back to the topic then' date=' and relating to your industry, I have found some wheelbuilders in the states that also guarantee their work, again, far better prices. Since you are in the game, what would your price be for a build? Use the specs I provided earlier. A Hope Pro II hub, 321 rim, DT spokes? My best quote so far has been just under 2 grand.

[/quote']

There are lots of competent builders out there and many guarantee their work. I think it is good practice.

My prices are on my webstite but I charge R450 for a rear wheel and R400 for a front wheel. Should hte job become a difficult one - Revolution spokes, less than 28 spokes etc, I'll negotiate up from the base price.

Are you saying that you've got quotes as high as R2000 for a single wheel build? I wish....

Can't a person ask CRC to disassemble the bike and send it over as "spares" to make the import duties less?

You can, but customs here are not that stoopid.

Bringing in 1 x frame, 2 x wheels, 1 x handlebar, 1 x deraileur,1 x stem etc will trigger all sorts of red lights and they will say you are importing a bike and charge the appropriate duty - of course you MAY be lucky and it slips through, or you may not be so lucky and customs sees it as trying to avoid duties and slaps you with a fine - maybe not worth the risk.

Personally, I import virtually everything I have, I dont support any local shop because every time I go in they dont have stock, have to order it in, its the wrong one, it has to go back, takes another two days, drive through the traffic again, the price is differant from three days ago, the managers out riding, the assistant is on lunch and its only the receptionist on duty.

Now I sit in front of my computer with my C/ Card, buy what I want and have it conveniently delivered to my door.

Personally I could care less about the welfare of the local bike industry, I am not a welfare organisation.!

Porky, that welfare thing is funny...true, but funny.

On importing CRC  always label bicycle parts or such, so yup either you'll get checked or you won't. My stuff was stopped and fortunately I have an import licence, but if I hadn't...?

I did order two mtb sets (ex frame), two record groups and a full Tandem build!

This is quite true and also remember that as an individual you are only allowed 3 packages per year or R20k which ever comes first. After that you need to register as an importer. Customs aint stupid and they might overlook something once but believe me they wont do it again. And the fines and penalties they lay down is no joke.

I feel the same as most of you do about LBS prices and service being ridiculous sometimes. Thats why i started the venture with Token and Tribal. Keep your eyes open for news on my shop in the very very near futureWink And my prices wont sky rocket just because there is a little bit more overheadsClapClap

Got me wrong there, not talking clothing (hard to shop remotely for such items), that I will always get locally, I am talking equipment when saying kit. Eg. Groupset, wheels, etc. I will not go shopping for an entire new bike for myself either.
