Hi guys,

I've been going through user manuals and tech docs from RockShox's site, but can't find mention of the service interval for my Recon Race 80mm forks.

Mine have developed a very slight bit of play at top-out after about 10 months. Although I've felt brand new long-travel ones with more play, I'm wondering whether there's anything that could be tightened to get rid of this... Besides, new oil might not be a bad idea.

Martin the best person to call in regards to service intervals on RS forks in JHB is Jayde from cool heat he knows his stuff and will be able to help you with any other technical questions regarding them because yes the regular service intervals are good for a fork but in the year i have been riding my tora air shock he has advised me against servicing the shock because it was still hundreds

It is difficult to determine a service interval. Different conditions contaminate the oil differently but in general I'd say that a very long and wet ride can easily contaminate the oil in one go. Also, frequent dusty rides also sees dust go past the seals and contaminate the oil.

When the seals are still new, less contamination happens than when they're old. A good rule of thumb is that if the seals drip oil, they also allow water and dust inside.

I wish the fork companies would make it easier for the home service guy to get a look at the colour of the oil, which is a dead giveaway of its condition. Unfortunately you have to drain it to inspect it.

Leaky seals require immediate attention but that's easy to spot.
