I've been supporting my LBS through the years as far as my purchases go. I've seen on Chain Reaction Cycles a pair of shoes that are approx 35% cheaper than my LBS can offer them to me. What are the duties taxes etc going to do to this cost if I purchase them online?

I've seen a few things that I want so my total purchase is over R3800 which means I don't have to fork out for delivery.

Has anyone else purchased from CRC, and if so how would you rate the experience?

I have purchased from CWC here in SA and it was straightforward.

Duty on footwear is between 25 and 30 % so i am sure your Lbs will be able to offer you a better deal. Also check the model you want as sometimes they are old stocks being cleared far below cost.

Duty is 30% and VAT will be charged on the shoes at an effective 15.4%.  You won't pay British sales tax though - although CRC usually shows the price excluding taxes (if it is in ZAR then that is your cost + the duties and VAT mentioned).

CRC are generally pretty good and well stocked.  Postal service to OR Tambo is excellent, but once Customs get their grubby paws on your package anything could happen.

Spartan, I've ordered a number of times from CRC. Scratch on the hub must get two orders a month!!!!

I ordered 3 pairs of SIDI Carbon Shoes and customs didn't pick them up so paid no duty...sometimes the government gives back.

I respect stevens comments as a distributor, but the stuff I've got from CRC has always been the latest model / range.

But he is correct that the sale items are generally odd sizes or older models. Check out the PRINCIPIA frames, list R26,000.00. Sale Price R9,000.00

como bike has their price including vat.so do we pay the price that they quote or is there other charges too consider.

I find Como Bike expensive, they were cheaper a while ago, but since the euro has gone mad and the pound stayed constant (losing to Dollar / Euro) and they started offering in Rands, not so enticing anymore.

Total Cycling and CRC much better.

Jenson and Price Point just got expensive cause of the dollar and shipping is expensive and slow.

CRC 1st Place

Total Cycling 2nd Place

yup, IMO i find my basket of goods delivered from CRC to be cheaper than all other online retailers, their software is always up to date and order tracking available online, range and value are top at CRC. but as I said that's IMHO.

Are duties payable on all items or only shoes ? I want to buy a crank set from CRC - does that mean I need to add 35% on top too ?

Cheers

Nope, bike parts are duty free.

I live in Angola and need quite a lot of spares to keep both my Tandems running. I will not support local distributors because even after all their denials after the "Price Fixing" meeting and resultant debacle...... with some even coming out of it smelling of roses....... the prices HAVE GONE UP!!!!!!!! I order all my spares well in advance and www.chainreactioncycles.com is by far the best.

Just make sure that you order the correct stuff. Make use of your expensive local distributors and waste their time to find out exactly what you want. Then order the correct items from CRC. On shoes and apparrel you must be extremely carefull. Go and fit the shoes or helmet or other BEFORE you order. It is difficult to exchange this purchased in Ireland.

BTW. If I am in trouble I will buy locally, only because they offer the service.
