my partner rode Marin Mount Vision during the Epic and had no problem - at the end everything is all relative. If you only know 12kg bike then your body will get use to it, it is only when you through your leg over a sub 10kg bike that you feel the difference.

Last note from my side - I'm still trying to find proper reviews on this bike, but if you are looking for an all mountain bike look at Cannondale Rize. From the geometry it looks spot on to the likes of Rush and Scalpel - ie made for climbing with quite a relaxed headset angle - to accommodate the 140mm travel upfront fork. Evans cycles sell with and without lefty.

The suspension design is similar to Yeti and Spaz Epic.

Let us know which you end up buying and post some pics!

Cannondale Rize First Ride Report:

I would rather go with a Rize than a Scalpel or Rush. Rush is too long to be a super fast single track machine. Better for XC or Marathon. Scalpel short on travel for me. But for what it is the original poster wants, the scalpel might be fine. Problem for the "endangered" short travel bikes is that a lot of longer travel bikes (120-140...maybe even some 160mm) are just as capable and light when it comes to climbing and racing. Rize is a good option. A bit of a long-travel XC/Trail bike.

crow, following on from your post, do you (or anyone think) its worth getting a short travel bike?

I'm looking at the new Giant Anthem x1 (4"), but some guys advised me to look at the trance (5") given that I will always weigh over 90kg. I dont want to limit the riding I do to only XC type stuff, but also longer marathons/multi-day rides.

What do you think? Will the extra inch of travel really make a difference?

Wow, that RIZE is NICE!!  so is the Yeti, and the Giant, and the Specialized, the Focus is a brick, you can get a Marin Mount Vision Pro from West Rand Cycles.  Scott make nice girls bikes (ducks and heads for cover...Ouch) but you've forgotten about the GT's, Ellsworth, Orbea, BH, some Merida's are cool because they're made by Specialized engineers....Raleighs are cool - but ugly......I like the Gary Fisher 29'er but the Ventana El Kapitan is also good...................eish............So many bikes - so little time, enjoy your shoppingErmm

Your weight shouldn't have an influence on what bike you decide to buy, unless it's something stoopid light with a weight limit. I weigh a hair under 90k's and ride a Mojo SL. Frame weighs 2.28kg...that's light! Seriously light.

A Trance is in effect a longer travel Anthem. Rather go with the Anthem. You won't limit yourself unless you wwant to start doing bigger drops and jumps. Not sure where you stay, but you'll be able to ride 75% of CT trails. Only Paarl, Eden's FR /DH sections and Tokai's Cobra will have the better of your Anthem.

The main advantage of the Trance is a more relaxed upright position. Some like it, some don't. It is a great bike, but the Anthem is better. IMO manufacturers er when they try to build one bike to do too many things. Problem is you end up with a bike that does nothing great and doesn't boost confidence. Not good.

That's were the Anthem X will be perfect. And it's not the extra travel that make the biggest dif. It'll be the slightly slacker head angle. And then if you want a more upright position, fit a high rise bar or a stem with a greater angle. Problem solved.

Now, onto the weight issue. If you are a "heavier" rider, by a better fork / shock. That'll make a difference. NOT MORE TRAVEL.

Just so you know, bikes in the same "class" as Anthem:

Titus Racer X

Scott Spark

Merida Ninety Six

Specialized Epic

Tomac Carbide

Cannondale Scalpel

Commencal Meta 4

Marin Quad XCR

Yeti ASR

Pivot Mach 4

Class meaning intended use and NOT travel.

Similiar to Trance:

Felt Virtue

Scott Genius

Merida Trans Mission

Spez Stumpjumper

Cannondale Rush

Santa Cruz Superlight

Titus Moto Lite

Pivot Mach 5

Marin XC / Trail

Whyte E-120

Ride a 29'er before you buy it. And not in the parking lot. Try and get your hands on one for a weekend or couple of days and do a back to back ride with your current bike. They ride, feel, behave, respond diffirent.

Focus: Killer looking bikes in the flesh, not bad (but not great either) reviews, but think of things like resale value and long term back-up.

I have it on good authority Mr Crow, that you can make it down the Tokai Cobra section on a hardtail.

Maybe you should tell me these things you are saying here before you "show" me those tricky trails :-)

I have a Giant Anthem Advanced and a Giant Trance.  They are both super.  Trance a bit heavy but you can ride it for days.  The Anthem thinks its a hardtail.  Great for racing and all day rides.  The alu bike is not much heavier and unless you need to ride a tupperware bike, does the job fine.

Crow' date=' you sure the Superlight should be in the 2nd list and not the first? [/quote']

Yip. Based on geo and cockpit feel. Not travel or weight.

To illustrate a point: Scott makes the Genius. Great bikes, the 09 model with updated suspension design that is. What I don't understand is the Ltd model.

The bike comes with 160mm travel which means it should be a freeride light or hardcore AM bike. Other 160mm bikes include Titus El Guappo, SC Nomad, Giant Reign, Morewood Mbuzi, Yeti 575...seriously capable bikes.

But what Scott does is kit it with the lightest carbon gear out there. WTF? Who's gonna take a R130k bike and bomb it down Eden? Really. Who's gonna bash carbon rimmed wheels and rail Bridal Bath with confidence with SL brakes and undersized rotors? All in an effort save weight. I'm all for weight saving...but then why have 160mm travel?

Super light + 160mm = stoooopid.

Come one, come all!

No, seriously...hmmm...it's a light AM / trail bike. Not sure. It's a bit of a freak bike. With AM wheels and burly fork guys are doing stuff that borders on DH with it. Heck, Brian Lopes have actually been winning 4x and DH races on one. Just a bit short on travel.

But then again build with light stuff it comes in at under 10k's at two thirds the price of a Genius Ltd.

On paper it's tricky. Mostly cause it's made of carbon. But my riding buddy has a burly AM bike made of ALU and his rear tri cracked after 6 months. My bike's recently had a first full service and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Not a bearing, not a pivot, not a link...all good.

Out out on the trail it'll run with a 575, Nomad, El Guappo and Enduro. The biggest disadvantage is slightly steeper HA and lower BB. But when it comes to sgl track and trail the lower BB is perfect. I love the lower centre of gravity. That's one of the man reasons I bought Mojo and not the 575 or Nomad.

Only at the Nomad's upper extremeties does the Mojo fall short. And that's only 1% of my riding. Now I just avoid that.
