Free Fork and Shock Service - Once-off offer.*

I'm training a few aspirant bicycle mechanics on fork and shock maintenance and repair and I need some demo forks and shocks for the class. You bring us your tired fork that's badly in need of a service and we'll service it for you and return it good as new. Gratis.

I need:

1) High-end Rock Shox - Reba, Pike, Syd, etc.

2) High-end Fox.

3) High-end Marzocchi

3) Rear schocks - any brand.

* What's the catch? The catch is that you pay for the parts used - seals, O-rings, foam rings and oil.  Only the service is free.

I intend doing this class mid-Feb and would need the shocks for one day only.

Workmanship will be top-class and gauranteed.

If you want a free shock service, drop me an e-mail at johanatyellowsaddledotcodotza.

I have Suntour XCM which can use a bit of TLC (as it is the step child after an upgrade)...

Wow! I've had a zillion PMs and lots of repllies. Unfortunately I have to hit the traffic now and can't tend to you guys until this afternoon.

Also, I see lots of requests for this or that fork and I know, the minute I say yes, you want to know what the parts will cost. Let me prepare and get ready for that question before I reply.

But as my time-share salesman friend was trained to say in response to any cost-related question: "aaaag, not much..."

I have had a good response from this offer. Thanks to those who contacted me. I could probably squeeze in one or two more if anyone is interested. Most of you have contacted me via e-mail and if I haven't responed to you here, please drop me a mail. I found it difficult to match real names and nicknames.

There will be another course in two months time. I'll keep you posted.

As planned, we had the 1 1/2 day fork service workshop.

Thanks to all the donors who participated and brought me their forks. We had a nice selection of Rox, Fox, Manitou and Marzocchi. Long ones, short ones, black ones and silver ones.

More interesting is what we find inside some of these forks, a clear indication that most fork owners don't service them often enough.

Some of the cases were quite sad, a fork ruined just because the owner didn't notice the tell-tale signs of neglect.

Anyway, on a more positive note, there are now a couple more mechanics in town (all from Jhb) that will do a better job of servicing your fork next time you take it in. You'll recognise them by the oil in their hair, clothes and shoes. It is a dirty, oily business.

Here's some photos of the basket cases. Don't let your shock get that bad.

What you are looking at here is the remains of a Manitou's teflon bushing. The fork oil was so dirty and the seals so contaminated, that the bushings started to disintegrate.

What is this? An ince-cream bucket with a bit of dirty water and a few drops of oil floating on top. This was courtesy of a poorly maintained Rox. It stank of high heaven.

Here you are looking at a stanchion ruined by a paste of mud and grease that accumulated underneat a wiper seal. This fork would have performed poorly for months before it started to wear the stanchion.

Healthy bouncing baby shox, ready to go home.

I know the stanchion pic is from my Manitou, I assume the seal is as well?

Guess I can write this one off as school fees - It looked a bit worn, but I still didn't check it that properly before I bought it. Never really crossed my mind that someone would let their stuff get in such bad shape. Oh well.

On another note, Manitou Black for sale. Great condition, just been serviced. LOL
