If bikes' date=' walkers, runners, are allowed to use the same trail, bikers should give way to the pedestrians. I don't know where horses fit in though.

Be nice and accommodating. It takes very little to say hi and move over. You could've ended up with a date tonight.

I've had a very similar experience in the Faerie Garden.  Came round the corner to look a horse in the face.  But the horse was pretty chilled and the guy riding it was very friendly.

I don't mind the horses going around Tokai, but have an issue when you take the horse down a narrow single track where you know there are bound to be MTB riders on... it's just reckless . I also have an issue with the horses seriously damaging the single track. The single tracks in Tokai took a serious beating during winter and the horses had quite an impact in that as well. Some of the trails have only just been repaired, and they are already in a state. They have gone from mud to hard pack to soft powder.

JR, thats the point, you know there are bikes, but do they ?

Maybe it was their first time on this track and as it waws not marked MTBers only they thought they could use it?

Did you take the time to chat to them ?

And single track ? so if they were in single file could you have gotten past them ?

What should they have done to make your ride more pleasant ?

flippen best thing said all year !!

Sure... lets be accommodating. What if the horse had gotten seriously spooked and taken off into the bushes throwing the rider off with the potential of a very serious accident.

I am always friendly to the people I meet on the trails, and always offer a smile and a friendly word. I'm not going to be friendly though to someone who is reckless !! Would you be friendly to someone who had just nearly run you over in their car as you were crossing the road at a Zebra crossing  or traffic light when it's green for walking ? ... "no worries mate, I was in the wrong walking across the road" Smile

All good points Slowbee. ?However what is key is that if you want to ride your horse in Tokai (part of the National Park) you need to have an annual permit. ?As part of buying this you get told where you are / are not allowed to ride. ?

there is also a sign at the gate which provides some indication....

JR, are you upset that the horses were on the trail ?

or are you upset that they got spooked and could have hurt the riders due to your suprise ?

and just exactly how were these people reckless ? by being on the single track ?

Jeeezzzz... I appologised above already. I really didnt mean it like that and Im sorry that It reflected Like this, as If you ever me you would not find me the kind of person at all.

did you read the rest of the story and how I was given lip by the lady ? I mearly made a comment that I think is valid as I found out (sisters, girlfriend etc) that Girls often dont think logically and like the other comments I made Im just as concerened about their safety as they will be the ones getting hurt when the horse throws them off.

If they are riding horses in Tokai they must know there are MTB's... the cars in the parking lot and loads of people on 2 wheeled contraptions everywhere surely would be a dead give-away.

If you are unsure about a trail.... don't take it.

Faerie Garden=narrow single track. There is no way to even get 2 bikes past each other without 1 person pulling over completely.

They could make my ride more pleasant by not being so reckless.

Hi

I've noticed this aswell... luckily I haven't had the same experience as you... ?

Perhaps try contacting SANParks who administer the area? ?All horseriders have to have permits and there are not a lot of them apparently. ?So it shouldn't be too hard for SANParks to issue a warning / please to the approx 100 riders NOT to use singletrack built specifically for MTBing.

Trail sharing is all very well on large jeeptracks / roads. ?Its ridiculous on singletrack

as long as you stick to riding on mtb routes only as well and have never taken a chance and ridden where you should have not.

no I don't ride where i?should not.??i'm?not?aware?of?the fact?that generally landowners have?a good?sense?of what?is?going?on, and?are more?receptive?to law abiding users than?those breaking?the?rules. ?ever tried?to get?access extended /?more trail opened only?to have?the?landowner/manager?put?the 'but we don't trust mtb'ers coz they?don't obey?the?rules now' argument...?

JR, maybe I am just missing my reading glasses, but how were they reckless ? By being on the wrong trail ? ( we have covered this, and as cheryl says SANparks might need to patrol things better)

Or because the horses spooked ?

Annoyed that people take their horses on the single tracks and damage them. Not upset that they were there.

Upset that the horses were clearly very skittish, and a serious injury could easily have occurred.... and I would have probably been blamed for it.

I may have come out of the experience with a different point of view if the horses had not been skittish and just ignored me. I probably wouldn't have been ranting today.

Cheryl - my understanding of tokai is there are loads of trails, and it would be  hard to map them all, but, has anyone tried to indicate which paths can be used, or are open to other users ?

Has anyone tried to go to the surrounding stables and tried to communicate trail usage to them ?

I know a few horse riders who often often talk about mtbikers on paths meant for horses only.
