We have Andrew and SuperCycling to blame for this one - I remember an episode many years ago when Arnie still had his original hair' date=' and Owen hadn't yet doped where they suggested this rather odd behaviour.

Haaaaa,Haaa,Haaa, Classic, that just made my evening.!!

............But, to give Arnie his due, he was quite an accomplished runner, dont know now, but I remember running a few events with him and he was no sloth.

Arnie very closely resembled a sloth on 30th November when he was supposed to be entertaining (although the snoring was entertaining and made for a good impromptu photo shoot), and the 1st of December when he supposed to be riding.  I rode for 12h30, didn't see him once.

Anyway, agree with all.  The bottle thing is just stupidity and about time it died.  There are still a few KZN roadies that do it.  Never understood the bum slapping - point (and shout if necessary).  It does remind me of the time I was riding with a bunch of poms in the Pyrenees - I yelled "car up" as we were winding up a narrow pass that could barely take a car let alone a bike and a car moving in opposite directions.  They all looked behind them - to this day I can't understand why.  Perhaps Greyowl or one of the other limeys can explain.

I used to bum slap as well, until I went for a group ride with some pro/elite riders. No bum slapping or finger pointing for them, or taking hands off the bars. They just flutter their fingers off the bar as they approach an obstacle- very effective at catching your eye, and not once did I feel that I was not warned sufficiently. Energy efficient, safer, unperverted and not masochistic.

Wow. I'm guilty of of bum slapping, bottle waving, all things I learned from people I used to ride with. Glad to hear I don't have to do this, I still need to find a guy offering brandy & coke in his bottle!! smiley36.gif

What about the protour riders who relieve themselves while on the bike. You don't see them waving their manhood about before taking a whizz. Smile

I would never do that cause I am scared it will get mangled by the spokes and that would certainly hurt!!!!!!!!!

I always assumed you slapped your butt to draw the attention of the rider behind you. Personally I prefer to just shout (glass left, twit holding his waterbottle right etc.)

The bum-slapping I can still relate to as I find it an effective heads-up thing. Sometimes, one is so busy concentrating on not riding into the wheel in front, that this is where you are "zoned". The slap sound brings one's attention to the fact that there is a hand signal coming.

The bottle waving, I agree. It's just plain daft. I saw a lot of it during the fast one and it was scary. You see that bottle come out and hope like hell that the dude has the mind to hold onto it while taking the long route to his mouth. Otherwise, it's on the road and prob'ly under your wheel.

It is a pathetic practice with no benefit, high risk and it should be stopped immediately.

Unless of course you are just being polite and toasting your fella rider or bragging about the colour and flavour of your bottle contents. Either way, it is stoopid.

I'm with S2L and word on the bumslap thing. (assuming we're not head down jan smuts at 70km/h) it doe draw attention and takes out of the hypnotic focus on the wheel in front mode, but the bottle thing is just stupid. I always thought it was the guys just stretching their arms out a bit. (come to think of it, maybe that's what andrew was doing originally)
