would it be worth it to keep these older shimano parts and match with newer 105's or Ultegra???

Brakes - DA BR-7402

Rear deraileur - Ultegra RD-5600 (think 9 speed)

Andre if they are still working then dont buy new ones those are still awesome sets of machinery and not worth the hole in your bank balance to upgrade

well if i decide to go 10 speed then the RD is useless

i am not sure whether to go 105 or ultegra though. they both are 10 speed right? it's currently an 8 speed

who told you that????? the derailer is not set to work in clicks it is adjusted by using blocking screws and will work perfectly with any ten speed setup

all you need to upgrade to ten speed would be a chain cassette and STI's

if you looking for good reliability go for ultegra ten speed but if price is an issue go for 105

well i did a search on the deraileur and got a spec off the shimano website which said 8 or 9 speed....

and the FD is obviously not affected by your cluster. never upgraded parts before so i am really clueless. why i ask, cause my FD (6401) came up as a 7/8 speed

all that will be different is the width of your cage and the time it takes to take the chain from one sprocket to another which is negligible if you thik of the speed you will be shifting i doubt you will be wanting to sprint in the tour de france anytime soon smiley2.gif

but it wont make a difference if you get the gears set up properly i have done a few conversions 8 and 89 speed derailers to make them work on ten speed grouppo's and nobody has complained

also Shimano and campy will always try to sell a new thing on the range because it is "improved" when all they have done is made it a different colour so your derailer will be good until it breaks and you absolutely need to upgrade

ah ok, 10 speeds have narrower cages...if i think about it logically

well i guess i'm off shopping on the hub for a chain, cassette and STI's

thx turtlek

Don't you want to sell me those 7402 brakes, trying to complete an old 8 speed groupset. If you have an old 7402 rear der it would be even cooler.

The 8 speed DA rear der is an odd one, the only Shimano der that was not compatable with the rest of the groups, and had to have DA shifters to work properly. Go have a look at Sheldon Browns site for the lowdown.

This page gives the compatability between the various Shimano years/groups. So Turtlek is right, except about the brakes, they would work so much better if you sold them to me Wink
