Hi all

Im a newbie here and to cycling again.(The last time i rided was the Argus in '99)And recently realized how much i love cycling!!

So im in need of a new bike.Any suggestions??I saw yestrday at our local cycle shop a NEW 2008 model Raleigh RC 3000 carbon for R10k.They said "its great value for money".Is it?Or just sales talk?

Its Full carbon frame and fork.Shimano Tiagra groupset and i think Shimano RS-10 weels.

We worked out the "kit" (new shoes and clothes and helmet ect.) will cost me +- R3500-00

And i planed on spending R10k max.But if the rc is really "great value for money" then i am prepared to live off dry bread for a month....or two.

So any and all advice/replies would be much appreshiated!!!!

Thanks in advance  Thumbs%20Up

Considering the 2009 prices, it seems a real bargain. You could always upgrade the parts later.

I'm sure that the frame alone would probably cost you about R10 000.00.

I'm not so sure if I would go for it. The bike has a mix and match of Tiagra and Sora.

Tiagra - Shifters, Crank, Freewheel, Rear RD

Sora - Brakes and Front DR

Potentially nice frame, but poor kit. Upgrading will set you back a lot of cash, more so than buying a complete bike with Full Tiagra or better yet 105's.

Even the accessories are very down scaled - all Raleigh bits (seat, stem, handlebar, etc).

Don't compare with 2009 prices, Probike have gone overboard in 2009. The 2008 bikes were very cheap, probably best value for money in 08.

Look for an Alloy bike with better kit, the weight diff. between the Carbon and Alloy is ~500g. Just eat less for a week and you'll have dropped the 500g.

I would recommend you hunt around, look at Silverback, they are in the same league as Raleigh (if your considering Raleigh) and their prices haven't been as over inflated in 09.

Try Crown cycles in Lansdowne, they had some 2008 raleigh RC6000 aluminium with 105 components for around R8500 or RC6000 carbon also 105 for R11500Smile

Hey got a rc 6000carbon with full 105 groupo new in box. Only mediums in stock R13500 now thats a bargain!!!

Considerably better that the RC3000C, much better kit all round for only 3.5K more.

Ok, however R3500 above the stated budget.

I would look for something second hand for this price, as the specs are bottom of the range. You would get a lot more for your money.I don't intend to hijack your post, but I am considering of selling my bike which is in mint condition for 19k full carbon (isp) with light wheels and Dura Ace,all the components are top of the range. So i truly think you will get more for your money going second hand. If you do go this route I would get a cycling friend to check out the bike prior to buying it. My 2 cents worth. Thanks for all your replies!!

How much is it more or less to upgrade if i do decide on the rc 3000 carbon?Say 105 or better? And at the same store they have a 2009 RC 3000 alloy with full tiagra set for R 5890-00.Is the carbon really the 4 grand more worth?? any other bikes more or less in the same price range that you can suggest??

And my main goal in the future is to do a Double Century and a sub 3hr Argus. Are these fairly cheap bikes good enough or must i wait and save for a much more expensive bike??

I bought a 2006 RC3000 to do the occasional road race (my focus being MTB). The only thing stopping me from a sub 3hr Argus is myself. The bike is more than capable, the Tiagra kit has given me no issue and can't be to blame for my times.

I would recommend get a 2nd hand bike with better kit, carbon is a nice to have. When you are hitting good times and that 500g weight issue is holding you back you can sell and buy a carbon bike with proper kit..
