Roof Racks

I had a Thule roof rack. Took an off ramp too quickly. heard a nasty bang and found my bike, still attached to the roofrack by the wheels, dangling next to my window. Frame had come out of the upright arm which is supposed to hold it in place. No damage to my wife's car but derailleur hanger broken, derailleur damaged . total cost about R2500.

 

Probably my own fault for going too fast. I sold the roofrack shortly afterwards.

Which thule bike carrier system did you have? I personally have tried both the Proride and  Freeride and can't see the point of spending the extra 1k for the Proride. It's very unstable in cross winds and isn't as secure as the Freeride. I think the extra 1 K is just for Bling.

Thule roofrack on wifes car....makes a hell of a lot of wind noise. I'd go for towbar bootrack if I was in the market for a bike rack.

Have now gone towbar route so roof rack is up for sale.

You'll be surprised how much a rack on your towbar effects fuel consumption. I transport 4 bikes regularly, so the Thule has proved the most convenient/stable (yip, tried the local equivalent as well). But I used roof racks before that (with front wheels removed and fork clamped to rack ... before kids). Gotta say, you can at least relax when you hit the dirt roads (cluster, etc. stays clean) ... and if your QR is clamped firmly, believe me, it's won't budge. I drove into a carport with the bikes still on the rack and ripped the roof rack off the rails, but the bike remained clamped in!!!

Roof racks are for surfboards, canoes and paddle skis and for bikes destined to be scraunched against a low roof, tree, or barrier. If cars were meant to carry bikes on the roof, they would have been designed for the roof to be 1 metre off the ground. Just ask my Trek 470's  saddle. At least I got off lightly, but my bikes have never been back on a roof rack.

Picked up the stuff last night. 4 x Thule 530 Freeride carries. 1 x Thule roofrack system. The feet are wrong though but will try and get the right ones today.

 

All for the price of R200 bucks...
