I enquired about a Shimano Tiagra compact crank set from my LBS.

They did not have stock and the agents don't know when they will have stock again.

LBS is offering a Truvativ Elita crank set as an equivalent alternative.

Anybody used this crank set?

Any good?

Is this equivalent to Shimano Tiagra?

i've had problems with 2 elita cranks. its a nice, stiff crank but the right hand crank arm has developed play at the bb axle on both of the sets that i have used... smiley21.gif

It has developed play or has it always  been there?

Is the play on the axle where it goes through the external bearings?

I had the same problem on my tandem when I bought it. I have Truvativ elita cranks and they were loose in the bearings. I took the tandem back to the LBS and was told that there are evidently MTB and road BB's for these cranks, and the wrong one was installed.

if i pull the crank out of the frame, hold the axle in 1 hand and the crank arm in the other, i can feel the 2 pieces move where they fit together.

it does feel like a loose bb while riding but only on the right hand side...

Thanks for the replies guys.

Seems that there is not much difference between the 2 crank sets; comes down to personal preference.

This is actually for a new bike, which comes standard with full Tiagra, but I want the compact crank which seems to be out of stock at present, except in 175 mm crank length and according to The Dr. 172.5 mm will suit me best (not even sure if you get Tiagra in 172.5 mm - website only lists 170 & 175).

I am a short heavy "fun rider".

So LBS will be fitting the Truvativ Elita (availablecompact for the same price instead.

Just hope I don't run into the same problems as Anthony...

A mate of mine had the same issue with a Truvativ crankset and an Aerozine BB - turns out there's an adapter that fits between the axle and the bearing on the drive side. It looks a bit like a seatpost shim. Ask your LBS - if you're in CT, Olympic has them.droo2009-02-13 01:40:54

thanks droo, the problem is definitely not the bb [which is truvative].

the problem lies in the crank itself, possibly just a bad batch, but it's the crank never the less...
