From what I read here with regards to attacks etc. I don't feel very safe... Is it possible at all to do 80 to 120km MTB rides, starting from Centurion... Will be riding alone during day... Give me some tips on where to ride... any gravel roads to Hartbeespoort dam direction? Would it be taking a big chance to ride alone? Or should I just ride around the block for 5 or 6 hours? Where do you guys ride? Here I'm used to be able to ride 100s of km gravel in almost any direction I want to...
Cranky Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I'd train at Groenkloof Nature reserve on at least some of the days. It's usuallly used for about 30 km rides, but last year I did 3 consecutive days of training, riding 65 km there each day. You do have to travel over the same tracks several times, but you can go in any direction you like, and the wildlife (giraffe, wildebeest, zebra etc) help keep you entertained. And there islots of single track ,and rocky sections for variety. On weekdays there will be only a few riders there - it's blissfully peaceful.

Epic Cycles at the Doornkloof Mall usually have group rides stating at 16.30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and sometimes Thursdays and Saturdays at 6.30. Gravity Sux Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Agree that Groenkloof is a good idea. If you ride from Centurion to / from Groenkloof this adds another hour or so. You will only be able to do Groenkloof for so long as you do eventually become tired of riding over rocks. I am sure you will be able to find a safe route between Groenkloof and where you are staying. Check out local clubs / night ride as suggested above. Don't know if you will find company for long rides next week as most of those who do the sort of distances you want to do will be off to the epic. Safety problems have occurred in / around open veld near Irene and South East along R21 but I don't think any of the open veld areas are safe.

cat-i Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 chuck, we've had, in the 4 years of D&D, hone incident on-road, but the attacker was scared off, because he didn't expect that many cyclists - that was near smuts-house, on the tar-side. and then there were 2 indidents of broken-in cars back at the car-park. we now park at the irene mall, so cars are a little safer. we always stay together, except at the 'speed zones' where we know it is safe. i'm just back from tonight's ride, it's about the most fun you can have on a mountainbike.
