What's the big deal?

If there's someone out there who has that kind of money to spend on a bike' date=' wtf has it got to do with you?

A tad jealous, perhaps? Ermm

Definately not jealous...... I just stand amazed at the skewness of the system of values out there........ does your Fuel ride better than my Gary Fisher Tassajara???????

I must lose another 15 kg's before I would consider buying a bike because of it's weight. Buying because of the cool factor is just a completely different ball game.......I still want Pornstar's Cervelo with the HED3's!!!!!

I dont think Just Fun Cycling are ripping anyone off. The ex 9.9 costs $7149 in the USA. Add 15% duty' date=' 14% vat and shipping and you get your 95K. You should maybe point your criticism at Trek in the USA. [/quote']

Did they also have a 50% increase in prices in the U of SA????? Did not know they also attended "that" meeting!!!!!!

How is it possible that mass production of bicycles and mass produced Motorbikes  are so closely priced?

Trek in this case R95K

2008 Kawasaki ZX6R R89995.

2009 ZX6R R119 995.

These are highly tuned motorcycles and have infinitely more parts to manufacture than a bicycle... so how do they justify the prices of bicycles?

they sell 200 000 mouties and only 200 Treks.

Buy what you like at the best price you can negotiate...a good deal is when the seller is happy and the buyer is happy.

Saying that, I can't believe bikes cost R100K! MadnessConfused

but they will sell 200 000 XTR cranks, 200 000 XT Wheelsets. 200 000 XTR shifters...

I admit the frame itself may be high in production cost...but the components are mass produced and sold on a massive amount of bikes on all manufacturers.

The trek can't use bespoke wheels, bespoke tires and a full bespoke set of components...

most of the parts used for a motorbike can only work on that particular bike.

They sell 200 000 mouties and 200 Treks because anyone with some logic would rather spend that money on something that's worth it... They're making them more expensive because they're selling less because less people can afford them... With that price tag, maybe next year they gonna sell 100 at R180 000... who knows...

But even if you put the Trek next to the Kawa, I'll buy the Kawa if I had the money... simply because I get a lot more for the same price... actually... you can't even compare them... there's a lot more high tech stuff on the Kawa... at least high tech enough to make it hit 100km/h in less than 3 seconds...

You can't really take the US retail and add Vat + Duties to that... the importers get those bikes for less 50%, or even less...

Still, regardless of numbers sold... the Trek is still just a frame with other people's components fitted to it...

In the latest Buycycling they reviewed the new Trek Fuel EX 9.9........... it sells for R95 500!!!!!! how in the name of Hades do they justify such a price for a gatsaag??????

There are Bontrager XXX TLR disc rims for R21 500!!!!!!! again how in the name of Hades???????

It JUST takes the FUN out of CYCLING....... I seem to recall he was at THAT meeting as well....... wonder why it is only Fritz and Andrew that is under the magnifying glass?????????

Just think...... a few months ago this bike would have cost 50% less!!!!!!!! ....... still a blerrie lot of munny!!!!!!!!!

I think its all relative, much like most things in life. If you are a serious professional competitor, then perhaps all the R&D that has gone into that frame design will make a noticeable difference to you. As was previously said, they don't sell high volumes of these bikes, and yet there Trek will invest a substantial amount of money to ensure they are constantly breaking the barrier in terms of technology. For the average cyclist, this technology is really superficial, but at the top of the competition, it can mean the difference between a win and second place.

The only company that I know that frames trickle down the order due to new devolpment is Cannondale. When I got my Caad 4 they were raced in the TdF three years earlier. So one day their current top of the range will be their bottom of the range. Not like other companies that makes cheap frames to fill the cheap market.

as the old saying goes: "A fool and his money are easily parted".

still, a solution to all of this is to get a decent job or business and make proper money.

I agree about it being a total rip off for a bike. For 100k you can get a really rad motorbike, a semi-crap-half-decent second hand car, a DOPE round the world trip, a down payment on a property, which is not a depreciating BS asset like a bike [toy].

Guys like Fritz and Andrew are not the baddies here though, they've just spotted a bunch of over obsessed riders and they're supplying to the demand. Nobody gets forced to buy bikes like this, and you know what the saddest is...the kinds of people I see on these 100k bikes are overweight mid life crisis testosterone starved men who need to fill that gaping hole in their life WITH A BIKE that is so technically advanced and over designed for their needs that it's actually a joke to watch these weekend warriors out on the trails plodding along.

sucker born every day eh.

Still, I cant talk, I got suckered into buying a DB9, but then I get chicks with that too ;D
