I am busy with eternal upgrade quest for my trusty steed and the time has come for the crankset and BB.

I currrently have a Truvative 5d cranks with an Internal BB. I am looking at the SLX crankset but how do I go about ordering the correct external BB? What do I need to look at and measure? I know there are different threads etc, without going to the LBS for an answer and sales pitch..?

My UK bank acc is to be closed and I can think of no better place than to spend than CRC!

The frame is a 2005 18" Merida Matts Speed.

As far as i'm aware there are only 2 sizes of MTB BB shells 73mm and 68mm. It you buy one of the new external BB's, they come with spacers to fit either size BB, so you dont need to worry about the width.

Regarding the thread, I think all MTB BB's these days are a standard (english) thread?

The SLX crankset comes with a BB. The BB will work with all frames. The only difference is the number of spacers you insert when installing the BB. The Crankset should include instructions.

You need to decide on two variables: crank length and gear ratios.

I'd actually advise calling Solomon's for a quote. I think their price on an SLX crankset is the same as CRC: about R1500.

The options for crank lengths are 170mm or 175mm. I will check what the length is currently

Price for SLX comes in at R1304 from CRC ex shippping

Gear ratios are the standard 44.32.22

Add 14% for VAT and you're at the Solomon's price. Give em a call. I'd be surprised if they won't agree to R1500. Those gents are dealmakers. Depends where you stay as well, I suppose. If you're a Capie then it's probably better just to buy of CRC.

Reason for CRC is that a) I have the pounds and b) I have family there in a few weeks who can recieve the delivery locally and bring it back here.

I just need to make sure I get the right parts, hence the post
