@Velouria: Can anyone MTB in Lourensford (I live 2km away)?

No. You need to go through Mavericks, and only on the days they do. When I asked they said members of mavericks club get preference if numbers to high.

Thanks, will pop in there to find out more.

I've only started to cycle (in the last month) so I'm just looking for some casual routes where I'm not holding up other cyclists. Went up spook hill on Sunday and that took me an hour from my place (opp Somerset House).

Thanks Velouria, will check it out.

Also' date=' you can pop over the mountian to Oak Valley, Thandi or Lebanon for some awesome MTB.

Is it safe to cycle there alone?  I mean "safe" as in for a girl cycling alone, not "safe" as in no chance of wiping out, because wiping out is a given. Wink

I've found an awsome piece of track - up Spook Hill and onto spanish farm them turn off into that forrest area - you can cycle fire & jeep tracks for many km's and end up below the Helderberg.. Stunning views of the entire False bay....

All this within  afew km's from home...Viva Somerset West!!!

PS: Cycled with Mavericks in Lourensford a couple of times...excellent, good bunch of peeps...and they devide the group into smaller groups (1) epic (2) intermediate (3) social etc. and then set off.

I'll recommend it anytime...contact Mavericks for details.

I don't think so - with the fire that went through there the farm management got all touchy and are busy reviewing the situation of allowing outsiders onto the farm.

Join the club - R200 per year, and you get a discount on the rides (save R10 a ride - all money goes to Lourensford, nothing to the club). You also get a Ride Mag subscription, and other specials and deals. And don't worry - the club rides will be quite empty now that winter is approaching.

Oak Valley is safe - have heard some stories about cars getting broken into at Thandi and Lebanon. Oak Valley is becoming quite popular, so there will always be another cyclist nearby. Contact William's Bike Shop or Maverick if you are looking for a ride - between the two shops one of them should be riding on the other side of the mountain.

Quote....@Cassie: Is that the driveway next to Spanish Farm Guest Lodge at the   bend? Or is it lower down. Was there Sunday morning.

But anyway, is do those trails not lead down to Helderberg Farm's MTB trails.....

Yup, that's it...I haven't found the connection to Herderberg farm yet, But i'm sure there is one.

I will keep on trying.....

Isn't it a shame that all the best riding spots are ALWAYS on private land???

That path through the forest makes me feel like i'm in Sabie somewhere...

And some serious climbing as well!!!  Great excersize...

Then there is also some dirt track next to the railway line, past Sir Lowry's Village...go to the end of the tar road and hook a left (next to the rail line) by the entreance to High riding estate.....

Bit shortish, but great for a quickie if you do not have much time on hands!!

Fairly safe as well i'd say...
