So, with the winter coming up fast, i have decided that I want to build up a MTB. I want to use 2nd hand parts to do this project. My question is this:

I'm not a weight weenie, but what weights are 'acceptable' for the various parts (frame, forks ect.)

I'll start:

- I'm building an On-One 29er HardTail, and the frame is 1.6kg

- 29er Fox Forks or RST are in the range of 1.75kg to 2kg

For a HardTail, my view is that, at a resonable price, you can expect to get in the range of 10.5kg to 11.5kg. for the complete bike - possibly 12.5kg for a SoftTail.

Low Weight = High Price!

who's worried about weights. Just get 2nd hand parts that work and fit together..ie sometimes you cant use the 150mm fork with the 3mm XC softtail...or the Shimano shifters with SRAM RD. and check that you have the right size FD,BBs, seatposts, clamps etc..

I have a 18" on one scandal 29er that's sits around 12.5kg's

Built is :

RST M29er air fork

SRAM X9

on on reetard wheels(specilized fast track and the captain tyres, converted to tubeless)

Cane creek s2 headset

kcnc sc bone riser handle bar with Ergon GP1 grips

Avid juicy 5 hydrolic disc brakes

XT crankset with kcnc bolts

eggbeater SL pedals

KCNC scandium seatpost with kcnc seatpost clamp

fizik aliante saddle

SRAM cassette..erm the one with the red on the inside :)

I suspect the weight sits in the wheels.

Daemon,

I'm building a very similar setup!

I haven't weighed everything, but the bare On-One front wheel (no disc, tube, trye or skewer) weighs in at 1,010g (as a comparison the Bontrager Rhythm Comp weighs in at 926g)

I'm not sure what are the lightest 29er wheels (Bontrager XXX Lite are advertised at 1,660g) but I suspect you're not going to get much change out of 2kg for a set - add to that that 29er tyres are, generally, heavy (Bontrager Jones ACX 2.2 Tyre = 668g) - you're not going to get a featherweight 29er.

I'll let you know what mine weighs in at, once it's finished.

Cheers,

Dave.

Aah wow that's interesting about the weight of the on one front wheel, which is really a Novatec hub laced to a Alex rim(http://www.alexrims.com/product_detail.asp?btn=5&cat=5&id=108)

Running my on on reetard wheels tubeless.

Lightest 29er wheels I would say would be Stans Race rims(410gram) laced with say DT swiss comp spokes to Hope pro 2 hubs.

Also interesting to note my Specialized tyres on the 29er is actually lighter than the 26" UST Continental mountain kings. And if your really in the mood to go lightweight on tyres, you can try Stans The Crow tyres(400grams per tyre), they are lighter than most 26" tyres.

Reckon 10.5kg's is a realistic weight for a 29er Scandal without spending silly amounts of money on it.

Daemon - mine currently weighs in at 11.84 kg complete. I'm hoping to get that weight down a bit with a few component changes (XTR Shadow Rear Derailleur and XTR Cassette), but I think it will still be around 11.5 kg.

I'm sure I could get lighter tyres (currently Bontrager Jones Tubeless, but with tubes), but won't be going that route until the tyres are worn.

A further 1 kg is a lot to loose - I could gain 100 to 200g going for a 'knife-edge' saddle, but I won't be compromising in that area!!!

So I think, at the moment, 11.5 kg is the limit for mine.

Cheers,

Dave.
