The detailed map and request-for-approval letter was delivered to the EC Provincial Government Roads offices in KWT.

We now await their approval which is merely a formality as it has been approved in principle.

Thanks to Dirty Twin for all his hard work!!

Thanks DT and CS for your hard work!

Where will these signs be erected?

Depending on funding, we are planning to have signs erected on the entire Marine Drive (EP Herald Race Route) including Cape Road, William Moffat & Heugh Road.

If we can't do the entire route then we will concentrate on the 'dangerous' sections.

If you are (or you know of someone) willing to contribute towards these signs please pm me or Dirty Twin.

Surely the local authority should pay to have the signs installed.

What about bicycle lanes? How many of the popular cycle routes have lanes for cyclists?

We have a similar problem here in CT. After the death of several cyclists in prep for the Argus, the City Council put out to tender the planing, design and construction of cycling facilities.

FAKES, I thank you for your comments!!

Cape Town is definitely the more progressive city when it comes to cycling safety. However, we cannot stand by and wait for another person to be maimed or killed. We have to do what we have to do. The local governments have more pressing issues to worry about such as housing, sanitation & clean running water.

Plans are in place to make most cities cyclists friendly, but we have to take ownership and save lives.

I agree many times when I cycle with the Makro bunch on Sunday mornings people pitch up without any lights and last Sunday the mist was so thick ,but people still did not seem to care for their safetyConfused

I am pitching in rather late on this.  There is a long history to the development of cycling facilities in PE and there is actually alot going on.  The following needs to be considered:

<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

1)  The NMBM SDF was approved in March 2009 and makes provision for cycling and pedestrain facilities through an approved Master Plan for which there is funding.  Road sign funding should not be a problem

2)  SRK did the original study about three years ago and the signs along major cycling routes (for road cyclists - ie Marine, Round the Mountain and Seaview road) are included)  Some roads fall under the Metro others fall under Provincial government.

3)  Africoast has been working on the cycling paths.  Contrary to what our organized cycling leaders are saying in the latest edition of Bicycling, there are more than two bike paths in PE and new ones are being continually implemented.  Priorities are listed in the SDF.

4)  A key aspect is to increase penalties for motorists when they have incidents with cyclists.  Its simple, in <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Europe if you hit a bike, you can expect serious penalties.  In SA, its not really an issue.  That needs to change and PE can lead the way through local bylaws.  All we need to do is lobby for it.

What it boils down to is that we need a strong lobby for cycling facilities which is backed up and supported by the organized cycling community.  In the mid 1990's a huge amount of work was done by the mountain biking community and we are currently seeing the results in the SDF and all the bike paths going up.  That work needs to continue.

Perhaps contributors to this forum should get together?

UPDATE:

We require 52 signs to signpost the EP Herald Route which includes Marine Drive. The ECP Gov is investigating if there are funds available to assist Sign-Up. If not we will have to start fund raising efforts ourselves.

Once the ECP Gov gets back to me I will let you guys know exactly how many signs we need to purchase.

In the meantime, those clubs and individuals willing to contribute please e-mail me at shaun@sign-up.co.za

I thank you in advance for your contribution and Be Safe out there.

Captain Slow' date=' what is the cost per sign?[/quote']

Hi Mandibles, the cost is R 600.00 per sign which includes a 4metre pole and fastening brackets. The sign is 1.5metres wide.

captain slow have you managed to get any signs up yet?

Unfortunately not as yet. It has been approved but the communication from Head Office to the works department is a bit 'slow' and that the EC Government is looking into their budget to see if they can help with some signs is taking a bit of time.

Sign-Up made this application in May this year and unfortunately have to wait as dealing with Government departments can be very tiresome and frustrating at times.

In the past these application have taken more than a year to finalise from application to erection.
