Jaqwil - I jest. Some of my attorney chinas are having a really bad time at present. Especially the ones into property! Also the courts are not operating too lekker and they moan constantly.

Leet22 - nice' date=' but very very high tech. You need a good mechanic - go and seek one out Smile

Don't worry. Wink  I am glad to be out of it.

Early retirement was my best decision ever. Smile

I still let my LBS service my bike and I am happy with the service I get from them. Smile

I just got my bike back after fitting a new saddle and new DT Swiss skewers. I saw a note on the packet of old parts stating "Free shock service"

I didn't ask for it but obviously they thought it was necessary.

Now that's service.Smile

Ja - service is what counts. It's also like any other trade - you need to build up a relationship of trust and accountability.

I get a kick out of the look on my clients face when I tell him that my pipework is < ="-" ="text/; =utf-8">< name="ProgId" ="Word.">< name="Generator" ="Microsoft Word 11">< name="Originator" ="Microsoft Word 11"><>

Leet22 - a leak on the intake manifold can be serious - it tends to "lean out" the mixture which may cause that cylinder to run hot. Get someone to look at it.

After a botched service last year I stripped my road bike bare using dvd's and manuals

dude' date=' that is amazing. I had to buy spanners and allen keys to do mine. does is matter which DVDs and can I uses my toaster's manual?[/quote']

I said STRIP the bike, so stands to reason they were adult DVD's.

Hopefully they don't live much longer than you; otherwise it could be the setup for a ghost story:

House haunted by plumber intent on carrying out guarantee Tongue

I dont know, I just feel if someone has put in a 5 year apprenticeship, 5 year varsity time etc they have a right to charge for their knowledge.

Hense I dont even open the hood on my Audi or look under the fuel tank on my Kawasaki when the light for a service comes on I drop it at the shop and go home.

My last Audi service was a major one, although covered by the motorplan I still get a copy of the invoice and it was R2700.00 which included new front brake pads, the usual oil and filters, a pollen filter??,6 x spark plugs,an air filter, reprogramme the tiptronic gearbox, various top up fluids, sundries and labour.

Labour 3.5 hours - R1300.00

This works out to roughly R370.00 perhour or part thereof.

This is in a huge glitzy franchised establishment with highly qualified staff who are recognised by the dept. of trade as skilled professionals and millions of rands of highly specialised tools and equipment on use - how on earth can any bike shop charge R350.00 per hour for unskilled labour (as I say, in the nicest sense) in a small backroom shop, with a few spanners and a few relitively cheap (by comparison) special tools.?

Its ludicrous, labour for bike services should be no more than R100.00 - R120.00 an hour, and as in the motor industry there should be set times for jobs, a service is charged at 2 hours, a gear set is 15 minutes etc, then if the mechanic sits around or cant get it right in this time, I dont end up paying for it.

Agreed porky.

The one thing that is a bit tricky is wheel building. It's really cool to watch a master at work - perfectly straight and perfectly dished - and it doesnt take him very long either.

I have built a few motorcycle wheels - a sweat of note LOL

Leet22 - people often say that I put the R350 in my pocket - I get to take home R60k per monthThumbs%20Up Ha Ha - remember that my rate is in fact for my "company", albeit a very small one, and this includes all the overheads - truck, labourer, petrol, admin, rent, tools, bank charges, insurance, phones etc etc et bl00dy cetera Confused
