I entered the Golovane race last night however I will only be doing the 20km ride. Need to get in some training before the longer ones. Have not been to Holla Trails since the race last year.

Not riding the race, but might come watch a bit.

I ride at Holla pretty much every weekend. A bit of a drive to get there, but I like the place

Ooo no I find it a tad expensive to drive there every weekend, great place though, but with giba that's in riding distance from home, does get a bit much sometimes though..

For me the difference between driving to giba and holla is 25 km one way, so no big deal to go to holla - have an annual membership there and it's quieter.

I rode through the river because I had new shoes and riding with cleats it was easier to stay on the bike (First race I was trying this option as I am used to running shoes. I didn't think it was a good idea to fit the goose with flat pedals).

The river we had in the 25km was possibly a lot smaller than you had in the in the 40km.

The Mongoose top tube was strengthened because of it cracking' date=' make sure your purchase a strengthened one, if you do go for the Mongoose..... [/quote']

The gusset/welding was strengthened and it was only 2008 models that had that issue. 2008 Canaan had a bit of a weight issue as well.

Both should offer good spec and value for money.

My LBS informed me of the problem they had had previously. Believe that Mongoose will honour any problems with the frames.

The 2008 frame was strengthened on the seat end of the top tube. I however got the 2008 model with the 2009 frame (gray/ blue in colour).

In regards to the weight, it may be heavier than the top end bikes but if you are not going to be right out in front of the race, to me it does not make that much of a difference.

The little history I have on the Mongoose frames.

Some 2007 frames had a problem on the downtube, around the area where the shock mount is. The ones that did crack were replaced.

The 2008 frames had the seat tube/top tube problem and that was due to the jig being out by, I think, 7mm and that would have caused a problem with the frame strength so that's why the little piece of reinforcement on them.

I don't believe the 2009 frames have the little piece on the seat tube anymore.

I also have a 2008 frame which is painted in 2009 colours and as far as I know there is no issue with warranty - ti'll be the same as for any other 2008 frame - it's just a different paintjob.

I'm also not concerned about the weight - nowhere near the front of a race and I'm a bit heavy myself. A few 100 grams is defintiely not going to make a difference.

My brother is in the process of purchasing a new bike in the uk, and is also looking at the mongoose as a possible purchase. during his research he found three variations of the goose frame:

1. no reinforcement

2.small reinforcement

3. Big reinforcement

Also - his local LBS will sell him a frame without the reinforcement bar that we have (as in picture 3). Must be because the poms are a bunch of namby pamby mtbikers and will not likely crack/break their frame!

the size of the gusset is determined by frame size.

AND if you read mags like What MTB UK and MTBUK you will see they ride harder then us.

You realise that was tongue in cheek.....?

Also - he is looking at large - why would they be selling them there without the gusset? does not make sense to me
