Lube/Lubing

I did the 9-5 event out a Delvera yesterday, don't know what I was expecting, but with all the rain we had over night, there had to be mud.  Cleaned my chain and sprockets quite nicely before the start and used some Squirt, higky recommended by my LBS.  After 2 laps I decided that this is it and bailed.  I was already getting chain suck and didn't feel like replacing my chain and sprockets.

While I was rinsing off the bike, the matter of lube and lubing came up with the other guys standing in the que.  The one guy mentioned that lubing while you ride is the only way to really counter chain suck, my next question was that how can you lube if everything is full of mud, uppon which the answer was "better to lube with mud than without mud" , this is really odd as I'm used to cleaning everything first before putting lube on.

Anybody got some experience with this?

I used to use wet-lube but this just caused that grinding paste when some mud-n-water got onto the chain. It's a GREAT way to shorten the lifespan of your drivetrain. Now I only use Squirt.

since recently, what I sometime do, especially when it is a wet ride/race, is to have a waterbottle with water with me on the ride (I ride with a back-pack). When the time comes to re-lube the chain due to it being dry/dirty, then I rinse it (chain, cluster and chainrings) with the waterbottle while rotating the drivetrain. a few more rotations to get most of the water out and then re-lube. Lubing with mud? not such a great idea.

Oh, chainsuck can also be due to worn chainrings "holding" the chain

also did the 9-5 yesterday. was a very muddy race. at the end of every 2nd lap I quikly washed off the chain, cassette and derallas. lubed them all with squirt. and was on my way again. had no problems at all. not even with shifting.

on long races where you cant stop after a lap I just spray it all with my water bottle then add squirt.

Would love to see someone lubing the chain and drive system while riding.... My guess is, you wouldn't be on your bike for too long as you get better results applying lube to your chain at the cluster point.

"Rock n Roll" orange lube is a wet lube and works brilliantly. If you lube with dry lube and everything cakes up with mud  then a shot of water from your bottle is your only hope or a deep puddle.

The problem I had with dry lube is that it works well for as long as there is NO water on the course. As soon as you go though a puddle - no more lube on the chain.

Wet lube is just to thick and ALMOST all the mud and sand sticks to yer chain.

WHAT TO DO?

Well, I started mixing my lubes: 2'3 dry lube and 1'3 wet lube etc.

Also rode yesterday and re-lubed every 2nd lap, just as a precaution. I have also converted to Rock 'n Roll, but use the Blue extreme lube. I've tried everything else and nothing else comes close!!

Dry lubes are for the road, as long as you wipe off excess lube from a wet bike specific lube you don't get dirt sticking to the chain smiley1.gif

Thanks for the feedback. Mr Mulebar, where do you buy that lube?  Good idea MJ, maybe that is the solution at the end.

The guy I spoke to yesterday said Motorex is also very good, and that is the one they apply while there is still mud on the chain.

Singletrack, the bike I'm riding with is in it's first winter, 3 months old, so I doubt it could be chain and sprockets that is already packing up.

I suppose at the end of the day is is experience that counts and no use  bailing out when you have a chance to gain that experience.
