The strange thing is that cyclists in particular are pushed relentlessly by CSA and the general media into this mind set of joining clubs where again the "discounted" idea is further enforced by incentives like discounted club kit, free magazine subscriptions, discounts in certain stores etc.

 

The prominent/big "clubs" are in fact no more clubs than the Pope is Jewish. They too are purely businesses, the club idea is a marketing tool and all those "members" have merely signed up as a captive market.

According to the me the race organizers keep on increasing the entry fee for the following reasons.

Higher entry fee = reduced numbers = less organizing = higher profit.

Look at the follwing.

Say the 94.7 50% increse in entry fee cause a drop of 20% entries.

But still a 20% in income therefor a higher profit margin.

Very short sighted. Those 5000 that did not enter would have payed more than R50 each on post race food and drinks, not alone other products they may have bought.  That is what many people (including rugby) are missing these days. There is profit in numbers and making the quick buck will in the long term always hurt you.
