What single speed crankset

I need to replace the old truvativ crank that I have been using on my single speed and I need some advice.

My first option is to take the Shimono LX (2008) off my MTB and put it on my SS and upgrade my MTB with an XT crank (amazing special ar CRC - R1359 ex VAT). Is the XT better and lighter than the LX to warrant the effort?

Second option is to buy the Shimano SLX double with bashguard and then remove the small chainring making it a handy SS crankset for. The only issue is i am currently using a 32/16 ratio and changing to a 36t front means a new chain and different back sprocket

Third option is to buy a dedicated SS crankset. I am looking at the Raceface Deus XC or Evolve XC

Some feedback and advice from the SS guys (Steel Niner, Rock, Holy Roller, The Thug or anybody) will be appreciated.

with SS, keep it all lo-fi, don't buy top of the range kit, its just not cool, the whole point of keeping in it simple is also to keep it cheap....I'm very happy with the race face ride SS crank, great value and has a proper ramp-less chain ring...........

i'm with rock on this one. i used an old 105 crankset on the alice conversion. i find the satisafaction from bodging the conversion part of the fun!

Thanks Rock

Looked at the the Raceface Ride. There is only R 200 difference between that and the SLX or Raceface Evolve.

I will also go down the road of using what you already have. Is the truvativ really poked mechanically or do you just want to replace for aesthetics?? I used a really old scuffed M960 crank and just 'spent' a few hours and elbow grease to polish them up with water paper and Autosol polish, now they just look plain awesome, and unique, just like a single speed!!

XT for the upgrade option would be worth a look as the rings are better than LX (more durable) and if you are worried about weight it is also better, along with HUB resale value.

choices, choices!!

Thanks Steel Niner.

I think that the XT option is starting to make the most sense, because I will be upgrading two bikes for the price of one.

Have you built up your Reynolds steel frame yet? (Post some pics in the SS thread) Nice chatting to you on the spruit the other day.

A proper single speed chainring does not have the ramps and pins that a normal "geared" chainring has.

Ah - Ok. The stuff I use is so old its pretty "ramp" free to start Smile

I found an old "Dotek" crank set for my fixie. used the inner chainring (42) because its smaller and mainly because it's much easier to line up! But I guess I could easily just use the 52 in the same position. Only snag is the bolt lemgth - you have to use spacers (same width as the big chain ring) if you only use one. Seems to work ok. Got a 15 on the back.
