I was to riding with Shimano M520's (420g). Brilliant pedals, not the best in mud, but all round excellent. My new bike has come with Crank Brothers Egg Beaters and while they weigh much less than the Shimano's and for that matter even the XTR version they are a pain to clip back into.

So I don't really want to increase the weight of my bike, but I need a set of pedals that work well, both clipping in, clipping out and durability.

So Crank Brothers are out of the picture, gave them more than enough time to grow on me and they haven't.

So I have looked at:

Look Quartz Cr-Mo's ~125g/pedal = 250g total

Shimano XT's - 352g total (tad heavy for the luxury of good pedals)

Shimno XTR's - 325g total (still heavy for the price and just in general)

Any other suggestions. The reason Crank Brothers Egg Beaters are problematic clipping in is because they don't have a flat base, hence the pedal can rotate when clipping in.

As for Look, are they durable and out of interest sake would the Look cleats work with the Crank Brothers Egg Beaters (thinking of moving these onto my Road Bike).

Thanks

Dax, before I bought my XTs I tried Quarts and Eggbeaters. Between Quarts and Eggbeaters I would take Quarts. For some reason you always can clip in. It's a wierd design. Don't get fooled about the 4 sided clip in that Eggbeaters sells. With the Quarts if you put your foot on the pedal it clips it, everytime. the reason why I went with the XTs was that the stack height of the Quarts were a tad more and them and the Eggbeaters don't really have float. They say they do but it is actually just a huge release angle they classify as float. Look at SPDs. When you are in the shoe can move without trigering the release meganism.

Thanks for the info, just a quick question when you say "stack height of the Quarts" what do you mean?

But ManFrog if you were lost in a forest you can't make scrambled eggs with SPD's ..... WinkLOL

I recently bought a set of Look Quartz Pedals. The claimed weight per pedal is 15g less than the actual weight.

Claimed weight: Look Quartz Cr-Mo's ~125g/pedal = 250g total

Actual weight: Look Quartz Cr-Mo's ~140g/pedal = 280g total

WOW. That's a first for me. Never heard of anyone having problems with Egg Beaters. I love mine. Clip in and out with no problems. I guess each to their own.

Good luck finding a pedal that works for you.

Which Egg Beaters do you have?

CrankBrothers EGG Beater C

Sure they must be loved by sum otherwise they wouldn't be sold. That said in nice controlled conditions (when it doesn't count) they clip in, when I need them to clip in quickly they let me down everytime. Perhaps I have been spoilt by my M520s'. I went out yesterday to explicitly work on some technical skills had to clip in and out a lot and they failed to work on demand.

stack height is how thick the pedal is. The thicker it is better the chance if it catching on something when the pedal is in the 6 o'clock position.

Thanks, yes I have heard this concern on reviews for the Look. Just watched a nice YouTube clip for Look. The video clip almost helped me in my decision making, but then some reading I have done has undone this.

What I like about the Shimano's is you can adjust them should you want to have a more easy release, all be it I have always had them on their lowest tension setting, it's the thought that counts.

At present leaning to XT's even at their weight premium, probably less likely to be let down with performance.

Did some browsing and found this:

XT pedals weght: 354.0g (I assume this is per pair)

Your Egg Beaters weight: 294g per pair.

That's 30g per pedal, so I don't think it will make a noticeable difference.

Thanks,

I got my LBS to weigh a set of XT's and XTR's.

XT's = 350g/pair

XTR's = 325g/pair

With about a R550.00 difference in price, so 25g in this case = R550.00.

Cyfermaster, you said you bought Look's now what's the verdict besides them weighing15g a piece more than claimed?

Thanks

I've only had them for a couple of weeks. At the moment I don't have any complaints. Haven't had any issues catching rocks etc.

I like the platform on the look pedal. Really easy to engage and disengage. Lot of clearance for mud and the colour is great.(I got the white ones). I used to ride the Shimano PD 540's and decided to try something different. Thus far I'm impressed, but will see how it holds up in the long run.

That's the weight on the 1st generation Quartz. LOOK modified the pedal with a slightly different body and stiffer spring, pushing the weight up a few grams.  I have only had positive feedback on the new 2009 pedals.

Actual Weight 2009

Quartz - 140g

Quartz Carbon - 130g

Quartz Carbon Ti - 120g

As ridden by Conrad Stoltz, Kevin Evans, David George and Ralph NAF to name a few.

Thanks cyfermaster and Tridude.

Tridude the fact that you have tasted that which Shimano has to offer and after a couple weeks with Look are still happy says a lot. I have had the Egg Beaters for 3 weeks and it took no more than 2 weeks to know I missed the Shimano's. Every day since then has just been debating which pedals to get the heavier tried and tested Shimano's or the unknown Look's or similar.
