I have a set of DT swiss Mtb rims model XC1800 and every time i go for a ride the rear wheel after a while becomes "loose" the only way in which i can explain is (the q-release skewers are still tight) if you move it from side to side it feels like a bikes whos hubs are loose or busy packing up.  but there is nothing wrong with the sealed bearings.

i have however noted that the hollow axle diameter is not the same it is bigger than other hollow axles but the q-relesase skewer is still the standard size.  So i am pretty sure it is the wrong skewers i need "thicker" ones do DT swiss rims have non standard q-relesase skewers ?

The thickness of the skewers themselves have nothing to do with the wheel fixture. The skewer only provides tension between the jamb nut and QR heads.

What you are describing sounds like loose cones. Even cartridge bearings have lateral adjustment. I don't know the insides of your wheels offhand, but have a look at tell us where you can see the movement. No use telling us the wheel can move, go in deeper and have a good look at the axle assembly and isolate the source of the play.

If the wheel is "tight" everytime before you go for a ride, and loose afterwards its not the cones or bearings. Unless they tighten themselves again after each ride.

Which they don't do.

My money is on a faulty observation and loose cones.

Is this a "standard" or a through axle hub?

In my experience (which isn't a shade on JB's, but I know a bit about DT Swiss wheels) you're not going to experience looseness unless you've left something out of the hub assembly.

Can you mount the wheel in the frame without the skewer? (NNB Don't ride it like this!)

If - once the skewer is removed - there are still a pair of lugs on the wheel that fit in to the dropouts on the frame, then do what Johan said. If not, then you need a through axle and I'm not sure of the implications for your frame.

When my 240s hubs did that (usually rear wheel first), I replaced  the sealed bearings and the problem was solved. These should be replaced with quality bearings. I learned the hard way. Chinese stuff will see you replacing them again within 2000km's.

I have the same problem using kcnc skewers.

I'm starting to look at the hubs now. Maybe they are a bit tight around the bearings.
