I think I know the answer to this one but is there any chance one could use Shimano bar end shifters with a Campag groupset?

Campag shifters are so difficult to find and are damn expensive!

Ok, sounds like a less expensive option...excuse my ignorance, and it might sound like a stupid question; but how would I go about doing that? Confused

10 speed Shimano Bar End Shifters will work ok with Campag 10 speed components. The spacing difference between the two formats on the rear cassette is tiny.

This only makes sense if you are using a Shimano rear derailleur. There is actually a significant difference in the amount of cable pulled per click between Shimano and Campag.

Interestingly, the amount of cable pulled per Campy 10spd click is almost exactly the same as Sram.

Therefore, if you have difficulty getting Campy shifters, you are better off looking for Sram substitutes.

Ok, thanks Kiwi, so you reckon the indexing on Dura Ace shifters will work as well with a Centaur Derailleur and Record Cassette?

I think so. I wonder if the slight difference between the Shimano cassette I used and a Campagnolo cassette will cause any problems.

BTW I'll be racing on Saturaday with Shimano type bar end shifters and Shimano type front and rear mechs and a Campagnolo cassette, that works too.

You will also get better results if you use a floating guide pulley (top jockey pulley) instead of one of the new-fangled ball-bearing ones. Shimano and Campag pulleys are designed differently for top and bottom. The top one has about 1mm side-to-side play and the bottom one is rigid. This is to prevent noise with gear settings that are slightly out.

With the set-up Kiwi described above, the setting will be out by 0.2mm on the largest sprocket if it was perfect in the smallest sprocket (10 x 0.02mm). That's enough for the floating pulley to absorb.

And this floating guide pulley you are talking about is the device Velo pointed out I assume?

No no no no no. That's a Rolllamajig - a highly dlubious device designed to catch crud and decrease shifting performance.

I'm talking about the standard jockey pulleys - those two black wheels in the jockey cage.
