Why, on the first page, does it say this topic was started by Mampara, with the rather interesting first line of 'Is Minki radio controlled?'?

:D

This could be one of the best - and most certainly, random, starts to any thread ever posted on The Hub! :P

I knew there was something eldritch about Minki!

With this being said - back to things more pertinent:

I have'nt entered an mtb race for ages.

Joined the PPA for a year, about 3 years ago - did one ride under my license.

They were kind enough to have me start in ZZ category.

Wouldn't begin to know how to renew - or whether it's even worth it?

Question:

If I want to enter any MTB race now - do I simply apply online or whatever, pay, show-up and ride? I seem to remember that last time I bothered to be informed about these things, you needed to be registered with a club (i.e. PPA) before being allowed to race in anything....

Does this still apply?

Damn, I feel guilty about such a blatant thread derailment last year.

I'm not 100% sure about MTB races, but I think they follow the same format as road races for which the license requirements next year are as follows:

  • To compete in any CSA-sanctioned race you must be a CSA member (R75/year) or you must purchase a day license (R35/event).
  • To be a CSA member you must be a member of an affiliate (province e.g. CGC) and a CSA-affiliated club.
  • If you want to race in a racing category (Elites, Vets etc.) you must upgrade your CSA membership to a racing license (R350/year).
  • There is no longer a specific Junior Racing license. CSA membership gives U16s all the benefits of a racing license.
  • You do not need to be a member of CSA to join a club. You do still have to be a member of a province.
  • You do not have to be a member of a cllub, but you will then have to pay for a day license each time you race.

Edman - you appear to have done Mampara / Minki proud.

Thanks for the explanation.

Though, to be honest, it still had this lazy git who occasionally likes to ride on different singletrack a bit confused.

I guess what I need to know - is can I pay extra on race-day, and then not worry about joining any clubs?

Yes. You can pay R35 extra every race for the day license and then you don't have to join a club.

There are some clubs such as ROAG that do not charge membership fees, so if you plan to do more than two races it may be cheaper to join them and then pay R75 for CSA membership.

:D basically YES -if you want to Race (seriously) in your Age Category - you have to Apply for a CSA Racing Licnce. If you are doing 'Fun' Riding (i.e. not serious) you still have to apply with CSA - but oly for a so-called 'Ciclosport' Licence (about half the priceof a Full liccnec. With a Full Licence, you are also eligible to compete for Provincial and/or National clours as well as represent your Country at World Chamionships or the Olympics (if you are good enough of course eg. Burry Stander, Robert Hunter, Greg Minnaar, Anke Erlank et al.). Hope this ansers your question? However, you need not be a PPA member in order to Apply for a Licence (at least ot yet - tings might change in the future).
