I heard yesterday that a cyclist was killed instantly on the corner of Empire and Rivonia, right outside the entrance to IBM, at about 7:50am on Tues.

He was a commuter and from what I was told, was hit by a guy in a mini cooper. I heard from colleagues that the car was not damaged at all. Goes to show you that you can be fatally injured even at a speed that would not cause big/any damage to a car.

I thought something was up because traffic was backed up badly until past 08:30am.

Guys we have to be so so careful out there - I wonder if its worth it any more.....

Are there any stats out there about accidents involving cyclists riding alone, vs cyclist in bunches? Does the "safety in numbers" concept work? Anyone know?

It's always bad to hear about something like this. Yesterday I was out riding when a Concrete truck passed so close to me that I almost fell. If I say close, I mean so close I am almost sure I felt it brush my shoulder and this guy was going like stink!!

this is so sad ... one moment alive and vibrant and on his way to work,

with dreams and fears and a family - next moment just a statistic.

but to answer your question, orvor, i feel safer in traffic when i'm solo - at least i only have to think for all the cars, and not all the bicycles around me as well.
