Campag/Shimano advice pls

Ok before the flaming starts (and hopefully some advice), here's some background

 

Ive upgraded my Shimano Ultegra 9sp groupset to Campag record 9sp last year, still using the 9sp shimano cluster.

 

Yip it worked fine, but either the cluster and/or the chain are now worn.

 

So the question for the tech gurus are:

 

1) how much will it cost to change to 9sp campag body and cluster with chain

or

2) should i just replace shimano cluster with new campag chain

or

3) should i get JB to open up my record ergolever and put in a 10speed spring (or whatever need to replace to get a 10sp click) and just upgrade - ill obviously will be a more expensive exercise seeing that i will need to change the rear derailleur too

 

with a new bmcfan_baby due mid november, ill obviously have to curb the budget a bit

9 speed derailleur should work with 10 speed.

 

I have a nice 9 speed record cassette and a rear wheel for you if you want to upgrade cheaply.

Don't bother changing to Campy. Shimano 9spd cassettes are much cheaper and easier to come by than Campy ones.

 

 

 

Also, don't worry about chain compatibility. A shimano 9spd chain will work just fine and, again, it's easier to find and cheaper.

 

 

 

Velo's right though: if you do want to upgrade to 10spd, chances are that a new derailleur won't be necessary.

There are lots of people who say that Campy 10spd shifters and derailer matched with a Shimano 10spd chain and cassette work perfectly.

 

 

 

I think there is a slight difference in the spacing of sprockets between Campy and Shimano 10spd, which means that your gear setting would probably have to be more accurate for the system to work well. In other words, there would be less room for error.

Jules has some good advice there. If its been working for you up till now then its probably better to stick with what you've got.

 

Nine speed campy spares aren't really available anymore yet you can buy a Shimano chain from Sportmans Warehouse if you have to.

Where did you find a 9spd record group (last year) since they stopped making them in 1999? If the group was that old, I hope you got it dirt cheap!
