I'm 1.76 tall(short) what size mtb and road would be my best options to look at?

I know all manufacturers are not the same and frame design would also play a part but just a good average start point would be great. Got this off DVbikes site, what would this translate into cmroad and inc mtb?

Rider Height:

5′3″ to 5′8″ (1.60m - 1.73m) - Small
5′8″ to 5′11″ (1.73m - 1.80m) - Medium
5′10″ to 6′2″ (1.78m - 1.88m) - Large
6′1″ to 6′6″ (1.85m - 1.98m) - X-Large

Generally speaking, these are roughly the sizes (although differences from make to make).

Small 16inch or 52cm

Med   18inch or 54

large  20           56

XL      22            58

Overall height is not really a good measure of size. For example, I have friend who is exactly the same height as me. I ride a medium, he takes an extra small. His legs are shorter than mine and his upper body is longer than mine.

Generally bicycles are sized according to seat tube length, but that is not really the best indicator of size because you can adjust the height of your seat. Top tube length is actually a better measure

get measured for a classic road frame. Then use that top tube length as indication for compact geometry road frame and add about 30-50mm to get your mtb frame size.
