Cyclists behaving ...... badly!!!!!!

If it was the M3 heading towards Constantia - the cyclist should not have been on the road at all as it is a freeway from the Wynberg off ramp at the top of the hill.

But as he was riding down a hill at speed inside the yellow line where you find or the grit etc that can puncture tires is also dangerous esp. if it turn out to be a fast front wheel puncture which can result in loss of control of your bike!

It was exactly heading down to Constantia. I do understand that grit and debris on the side of the road can cause punctures and loss of control etc... and again, why put oneself in that dangerous situation. I find it very hard to comprehend.

It still happens' date=' because I think a lot of motorists are not aware just how dangerous it is to overtake when a cyclist is oncoming.  But I have certainly found more and more that a motorist starts to pull out, see's you are there, and pulls back in.  When a car choses to overtake towards me, even though they have seen me, I just make a bit of a 'why?' gesture to try to alert them to the fact that they are doing something that is dangerous and may not be aware of it.  No need to make rude hand signals etc.

I also tend to wait until a car coming from behind gets a bit closer and starts to slow.  I then pull a bit closer to the side of the road, wave a hand to acknowledge that the car slowed, and pull out a bit when they have gone past.

Agreed - the thank you gesture goes a long way to endorsing driver/rider relations - 9 times out of 10 when a car has battled a bit to overtake me and I thank them they reciprocate.

I even thank drivers when they "wait" for me to pass by before they turn across my lane (the car turning right from an on coming position) - legally they are required to wait of course but that communcation creates an atmosphere where both parties walk/drive/ride away happy. We're turning more towards philanthropy now then road use I guess...

Ultimately the only succesful resolution will be a common roads users relationship rather than an "us" versus "them" attitude.
