Cassette help please

Ok, so I just fitted a new chain today and after spending hours adjusting my shifting, the gears are skipping smiley19.gif

I have a mtb with a sram pg990 cassette. The old chain was a 10 speed but the new one is 9 speed (as it should be)

So my question is - do i need a new cassette?

Here is my cassette (skips mainly in smaller gears when riding hard)20091106_122009_PIC_0143.JPG20091106_122029_PIC_0147.JPG

If your old cassette skips with a new chain, the cassette is shot. You'll find that those gears that are skipping are your most frequently used gears. It is no use looking at them, looks are too deceiving with cassettes.

oh how awesome... have absolutely no cash at the moment and 94.7 in a week... oh well, old chain will have to do. I may as well destroy the cassette and chainrings now seeing as I'm going to have to replace them anyway.

Thanks for the help JB.

Dude I had exactly the same issue not one week ago. Ended up doing a race with my gears all over the place.

In my case I also replaced with the HG93 chain which is designed for 9 speed and this is where all my issues came from.

Went to cycle shop fitted 10 speed chain and just like that life was good again.

Just my experience.

Good luck

If your old chain didn't skip in the gears and the new chain does, I don't think it is your cassette that's shot.

I had a prob with gears jumping even with a new cassette and it turned out my chain ring was refitted wrong way round

What I'm saying is there could be something els than a worn cassette causing the issue

I cant ride with the new chain, the slipping is so frustrating that I turned around 10min into my ride yesterday. And won't w worn cassette damage the new chain?

predictor - have you also got a 9 speed drivetrain?

slowtwitch - I've been over the bike from top to bottom and can't find anything, but I think I'll go past my LBS today and see if they can find anything.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Well, the gears that aren't slipping are still to spec and will mesh perfectly with the new chain asnd will thus do no damage. The ones that are slipping are no longer to spec and cant work with the new chain. If they can't mesh, you can't ride and they thus can't damage the chain.

The new chain does mesh, but slips every couple of pedal strokes. If I use the same gear and don't put a lot of force on the cranks then it seems perfect.

Then it is NOT meshing. We've discussed this here ad infinitum. Search for "skipping under load" and it'll all be explained.

Dude just go and buy a new cassette!

To make sure that the cassette gets the longest life, replace the chain every 5000km and you can go through 3 chains.

Is there a possibility that the hanger could be bent?

I dont think so - if the hanger was bent then it should do the same thing on the stand right? and how would a new chain affect that?
