Raleigh and Giant has excellent entry level bikes. Raleigh Ridge is listed on their website for under 4K, but I'd spend the extra R600 for the disc brakes.

ive just spoken to westdene cycles - you can get a merida 40D for R4500 and a shwinn mesa GSD for R4000, otherwise linden has the silverback alpine for R3500..
