I am a bit confused about stem rise angles.

I understand that you can set the reach with the stem, and then obviously you can change the rise without changing to reach by using different rise angles on the stem.

But what does the rise actually impact?

In other words, what will the handling difference be between a 0 degree and a 10 degree stem, or is it purely a comfort thing.

Handling dif will be same as running 20mm spacers and 10mm shorter stem. More or less.

On a XC or race rig you wouldn't really consider this as you would like to be as low as possible. Used often for Trail/ AM / DH riding to correct reach when standing and so on and so on...

different rise stems can have a huge effect on handling.

a higher rise stem rotates your back more upright shifting your centre of gravity rearward.

higher rise also has shorter reach (trigonometry).

this holds true for any bike, mtb or road.

Only for the same length of stem, so that is not my biggest concern. Centre of gravity more to the back means less ability in technical climbing, but better in going down...

Any other impact?

sin the angle of stem = opp over hypotenuse, hypotense is the length of the stem and 'opposite' will be the height gained by the angle, remember to double that if you're comparing running your stem facing up and switching it over facing downwards.......

here you would be able to see how rise affects the length of a stem. So if you want to keep the reach and increase rise, you will need a longer stem.
