Groenkloof vs Van Gaalens

Howdy all,

 

I have ridden plenty at Groenkloof and love the single track...... this weekedn I am going to ride at van Gaalens - have no idea what to expect - but I hope it is similar to van Gaalens.....

 

Can anybody give me a short comparison of the two????

i reviewed van gaalen for tread a while back. it is more spread out than groenies, if you get my drift. the opening section of singletrack is challenging and slippery in the wet, but huge fun. i think the terrain at groenies is more varied.

And I would've helped you too but for these important reasons:

 

1) It would've compromised the ethics of photo- journalism

 

2) My camera gear would have got wet

 

3) Most importantly, you had the cheese and wine supply for everyone in your Camelbak!!!

 

PB: For me personally I enjoy van Gaalen more, it has more of a flow over all and I feel like I really am out riding instead of just following a marked trail in loops. Like a hamster in a wheel.

Added to that, the hospitality of Eric and the van Gaalen folk is absolutely stellar. They are so accomodating of the people that ride there, one always feels welcome.

This is my personal preference though, as to vs Groenkloof the two are on a par quality wise in terms of riding.

I think HR's description of the trails sums it up succintly.

Just note that you need to pay to ride at Van Gaalens. Think it is R25. Also note that there are other routes around the farm that will apparently keep you busy for days.

We'll be there coming from the Westrand, hooking up with friends that knows the singletrack across the road from there.

 

Van Gaalens is more technical, far more exhilarating and you get dirtier there than at Groenkloof. But Groenkloof allows for higher heart rate training because it is more flowing and ample passing space

it's right at the end of the singletrack that kicks off the ride. you are supposed to pass it, but we couldn't resist having a little go over it.
