Can I fit a Medium cage X0 derrailleur if I run a 11 - 34 ratio, or will I need a long cage ?

In any event, what it the functional difference between a Long and Med Cage ?

I suppose the long will snag easier, but will the shifting be any different?

Thanks a lot

Long cage, especially if you have a triple chainring up front.

The difference is not in shifting or feel or performance or anything like that. The longer cage is simple needed to handle the big difference in chain slack between maximum and minimum chain use. Max is the combined size of the big front and big back and min is the combined size of small front and small back.

Will it snag easier? Who knows if a few mms make a difference. In my experience big rocks that snag will even rip a singlespeed's tensio pulley off. Or, if it is going to snag, better not have a crank on that side either.

Just use the right cage - long in your case.

Dankie Johan, much appreciated

A question I should have asked, would Medium be appropriate for 11 - 32, or would it still be better to run a long one ?

thx

biggestmig,

wht ratio's are you running up front?

I run a X.0 medium cage with a 11-34 cassette and 44x29 front chainring configuration.

You can run it with a 44-32-22 triple chainring as well but chain length is very important and also which gear ratio's you use.

E.g. if you are in the 44 you can run up to the 26 max which is the 3rd sprocket from the spokes.

you will have the full range in the 32T chainring and in the 22 you will only have the use of the first 4 sprockets from the wheel.

I have never broken a chain and my cassettes last up to 3 yrs with regular chain replacement.

I have not used a long cage rear derailleur in more than 10yrs
