I have taken the plunge on XX and enjoy the narrower chain line.  In essence you can use virtually the whole range of gears on inner and outer front rings without too much hassle.  I am using 42/28 front with 11/32 rear and have found the climbs around our area OK.  In fact using the 28 front ring, I dont use the "Granny" 32 on the rear cassette nearly as much.  On the odd really steep section I suppose I may have to concede defeat and run up, but generally by that stage you are riding at walking pace anyway.  There are not too many long climbs around with continued excessive gradient.  If I add an 11-36 rear cassette to the group I would have virtually the entrie gear range of a triple.

in terms of the 42 11 ratio, I don't feel like I am spinning out, except on tar descents where you can really wind it up.  That said most MTB is not big ring flat out stuff anyway.
