Best bike carrier option

Please can someone advise the best option bike carrier for a Honda CRV with rear wheel mounting. I do not like the idea of the strap on type which rests on the wheel as two MTB's can weigh a fair bit. How would one have to modify the standard town bar bike caddy or are the tow bars fitters familiar with type of problem?

alternatively get a tow bar extension (which reduces the load carrying capacity of the tow bar)

The Thule spare me 2 bike carrier is a great carrier that fits to the spare tyre by a through plate that goes through the vehicles wheel bracket, it has 3 adjustment positions to assist in centering the bike to the vehicle. Obviously the wheel cover cannot be attached at the same time.
