I need some help please.  I just got myself a KCNC Darkside 1" riser bar.  The bar is 710 mm long.

Do you normally cut handlebars shorter?  What is the ideal length, and what tools to use?

Yes you can cut them, how much depends on the individual, type of riding you do and the material the bar is made from.

MAke sure you dont take off to much otherwise you could run out of place for all your brake / gear and other levers...

DHillers and free riders tend to prefer wider bars for better control, XC and XCM narrower bars to save weight and navigate thru narrow singletrack.

Generally a fine tooth hacksaw or pipe cutter will work just fine.

Have the exact same one, which I cut down by 10mm a side a while back. I suggest riding it as-is for a while to get feel for how much you would like to take off. Also keep in mind to keep space for cycle computers, lights etc.

Then take deep breath and cut - fine tooth hacksaw was perfect. File off the burrs and you are done. Made my bike far more responsive - bit twitchy on climbs though, but no regrets.

TX SwissVan & patham for the feedback.  The current 710mm setup looks like an Afrikander Bull on my bike.

Will cut it tonight.  I see most riser bars are 680mm?

I like a narrower bar so I cut mine down to 620mm and it works a charm. But cut it in 10mm increments on either side until you find a width that you like.

I used a hacksaw but a pipe cutter apparently works better and gives a smoother and more accurate cut.

Before you cut the bars move your controls in wards and go for a ride. This will give you a feel for the new position. I do this and have moved the controls several times until I'm comfortable and only then cut. I prefer a pipe cutter for all metal bars and a very fine tooth hacksaw for carbon.

just check if your current bar is oversized. If this is the case you'll have even more problems fitting your controls and stuff. Had tons of problems with a 640mm bar - use to a 580mm. Went back to standard bar and everything sort of fits - biggest contributor to problem was the Hope Tech2 brakes that doesn't allow much pace under neath to fit shifter - but unique to my setup

What kind of riding do you do?

If its anything technical with drops, jumps etc you shld leave them.

ride the bars first LOTS before you saw them.
