The issue of weight is a very controvertial one.

Ideally, the best and first place to lose weight is your own body. THis is done by more training (and less eating).

but when you are at ideal weight. ie when losing any more weight will compromise muscle power output, then the time has come to investigate other ways to lose the kgs.

the second rule is if it moves, make it light. This then obviously includes lighter wheels, and cranks.

the third rule is if it is unnecessary drop it. THe single speed club will point to the shock and the gears on your cluster as say this is the place. but this means little things like do you need bottle cages when you have a camelpak?, do you use those oversized bar ends?

THe fourth rule is if it is not load bearing make it light. ie

the fifth rule is CARBON rules. Make handlebars, seatposts ext carbon

LAstly, if you want to risk it on a mtb, go light on the functional bits like breaks, drivechains, groupsets ext.

Remember, light, cheap or strong, pick two.

ManpreviouslyknownasKonafanbutstillchoosestouseit, I differ on the carbon parts. Compare Ritchey carbon parts to their alu parts. Alu is lighter and many times stronger and it's like that with most manufacturers.

So, what is good front shock to change to, have an entry level, coil.  Need something better that will survive the Epic, but unfortunately my budget is smallishEmbarrassed1skinnyman2007-08-21 08:00:04
