Not a review;  But this still seems like the most appropriate forum.

(Can't review a product that is not available yet and probably will not review any of these new models soon since I just got my Edge 305 which was ordered before this press release. Unhappy At least the 305 was cheaper. Stern%20Smile )

Garmin have just announced 2 new models for their cycling specific Edge range with map capabilities. The top of the range 706 is compatible with some power meters.

Thanks ML - they sure look sweet...

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how long before we see them in RSA?

I phoned garmin this morning and they were not exactly helpful. I was told that they hope to have them in SA next year sometime, but they may not tell me when. I then asked if i could import my own and was told that if I do that, they will refuse to service it in SA.

Its like they dont want you to buy their devices....

Why bother until the local profiteering agent get their act together???

Order direct from USA when it is available there. You save a lot!

Ordered my Edge 305 and Legend HCx (which is still not available in SA yet) direct from USA.

Got the Legend HCx for mountaineering (needed a colour mapping model to use with my topo maps http://madmappers.com/AfricaTopo/)

and the Edge for cycling.

Of course now they go and announce the Edge 706 which has functions of those 2 units combined into one (at first glance at least)! Ouch

I guess you mean you phoned the Garmin agent in SA... Avnic.

The policies of Avinc (they also own Garmap) are beyond my comprehension.

They take a huge mark up on the hardware and bundle all Garmin mapping units with a Garmap product (you can't buy a mapping unit locally without a map).

They also do not allow you to move a map product (remove from old unit and lock to new) if you upgrade your GPS. You need to buy a complete new map.

On top of this they refuse to honour the International Garmin guarantee for any direct imports. Garmin International will honour the guarantee, but you need to return the unit at your own cost to them.

In the unlikely event of a guarantee claim, the saving is more than sufficient to pay for the shipping many times over.

When I enquired about a topographical map for SA a few years ago Garmap did not have anything. So I made may own and have not needed to buy any Garmap product since.

BTW Garmin have a routeable SA road map available for US$100, but of course Avnic do not import it. They prefer users to buy their product at R2500.

OK, the Garmap coverage is better, but not that much...
