The difference bewteen an Ultegra 170mm 53/39 and 170mm 50/34 is 2g.

Unless the bike comes with a compact or yours breaks I would suggest this as the very last upgrade you do to save weight....

At R2,200 on CWC that makes it R1,100/g. Which would make the average 9kg bike worth R9,900,000!

This worthless information was brought to you by Eldron. Thank you for reading it.

But Weight Weenism is all about extremes!

A 50/34 crank lets you fit a 11-16 6sp cassette at the back and still go up hills:

Highly successful mate! has survived quite a few rides and at least 4 or 5 of those through zoo farm without any hiccup, prior to the surgery it switched off through there without fail every time :)

Job well done.

Rightfully so :D

The same applies to stupid questions like "can I fit slicks to my mtb?", "does it come in dual suspension?", "is a softer saddle available", "is there enough clearence for 27mm tyres?", "can I have some bar ends for my riser bars" and "HOW MUCH? DO I GET AN ENGINE FOR THAT PRICE?"...

I'm too afraid to take my spare bike which is a triple crank to him.

I shudder to think it's a road bike, surely not ...... :P

a compact also gives you a wider spread of ratios for the cassett on the bike. so if you run a 11-23 with a compact crank you get the same as an 11-25 with a normal crank set-up, plus the added advantage of more usable ratios inbetween. and don't through the 'you miss out on the 53-11 top-end' chirp, very few ppl will ever run a 53-11 out and if you do go down a hill that you can, why are you still pedalling?

A 34x16 allows you to go uphill? Damn those weight weenies are weird.

Thats a ratio of 2.125 or the equivalent of a ~39x18.

Thats how weight weenies work - they lose weight by kakking off so much in huge gears on the hills.

Someone hand me my 39x23 :D

Ultimate shame!!!!!! Are you mad man - thats like wearing a Western Province top to Loftus whilst holding your boyfriend's hand and eating candyfloss.

If you had any dignity you'd beat yourself up.

Agony Aunty Eldron's reply:

Moose, moose, holding onto a dirty secret will only cause you more pain in the long run. You should just let it out. Stand up tall, stick your chest out and say "I'm gay".

In my defence it has 11/21 cluster could be a 12/23 or 27.

That is kind of the feeling i was getting. Would hardly want to have a girls bike as my first bike!!

You clearly have not ridden up a real mans steep road on your road bike yet...

just to set the record straight, I run a regualar 52/39 175mm crank on my bike... I am just schooled in all thing mechanical so know the math.

p.s. Many pros use a conmpat set-up over some of the high cols on the TdF so don't be a hater...

Fair point. A few swats upside the head with a rolled up newspaper should do it then.
