Shimano WH-R500 - Campagnola compatibility?

After reading the most extensive feedback on my question as to which shimano compares with which campy, I now have another question. I am neither a die hard campy nor a shimano fan. I wanted to upgrade my mix-n-match groupset on my Silverback to a 105 10 speed. However, I can get a 10 speed Campagnola Veloce at Solomons in Pretoria for R1999. I can save more than R2000 if I go this route. My problem is that the groupset excludes the hubs. Would I be able to use my current Shimano WH-R500 or mybe the Shimano WH-R550 wheels on the Campagnola Veloce groupset? Or will I be forced to get new wheels? If this should be the case, then I will just continue to go for the 105 groupset. What other compatibility issues might I encounter, that I am not aware of?

No. Shimano is very stingy and only allow their wheels to accept their cassettes. Campag offer the option to use either. Fro that R2000 you are saving, you can buy a set of Pro-lites (if they come in Campag) or a genuine set of Campag wheels. There entry level wheels, which is way better then Shimano's, sell for less then 2K at Westdene.

Hey boet!

I use 10 speed Record levers and deraileur with a BBB cassette on a Scirocco wheel. They work perfectly with my FSA Chainring and 9 (yes 9) speed Shimano chain.

I'm not a bike mechanics a$$ but I haven't missed a gear in 2 years.

compatibilty schmompatibility - its just marketing BS IMHO Big%20smile

Can't go wrong with Khamsin wheels.  It is just the G3 spoked version of the Proton.  I have never had the slightest hint of a problem from any Campag wheelset (Proton, Neutron or Eurus) or my Record hubbed Mavic OP's.

Shamus - basically you are using a Campag cassette (made by BBB), with Record levers and derailleur.  The only possibly incompatible item is your chain, and since all chains are the same from pin to pin (length-wise) the only difference is the width.  So not really a good example, as Ergo levers are indexed to shift a Campag derailleur by the exact distance between Campag cassetted cogs (even the ones made by BBB).  Shimano cogs are spaced differently, so it is more likely that you will have shifting problems although careful (or lucky) setup may prevent problems.
