Hi

I had my bike serviced about a week ago. My bike is fitted with Shimano XT front and rear derailers.

The bike shop advised that I replace my Shimano cassette as it was worn. They opted to use sram cassette and chain.

Since the service I have not been able to complete a single training session.

I have had numerous problems ranging from gears slipping and chain suck. I have had the bike back with them on numerous occasions, but to no avail.

They have since changed the chain back to Shimano, but left the sram cassette.

Today after 100m ride my front derailer sucked the chain and it destroyed the front derailer and the new shimano chain.

My bike is only 8 months old and both derailers worked ok prior the the service.

So my question is: Can sram cassette and Shimano derailers be used on the same bike?

Should I change the cassette back to Shimano?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Eish, sorry to hear bout the hassles.

I did some research into this when I was in the market for a new cassette and chain.

Sram and shimano are compatible in every way except one...you cant use a Sram rear mech with a Shimano shifter and vice versa as they work on different ratios.

The rest is all good.

I have Shimano rear mech and shifter, Sram chain, cassette and cranks. So smooth.

my hardtails' got shimano, the trance got sram. i'm using the trance's wheel at the o on the hardtail, cos of a bent rotor ... and haven't had any problems with the sram casette on the simano chain and derrailleur.

Was the chain also replaced? If not there is your issue.

Repace cassette = must replace chain and normaly this means front chainrings will also be shot.

Life of a drivetrain depends on use and conditons. I have had to replace chains after as little as 500km, and then with better care up to 1500km. But then I have had to change everything, chain, blades and casette.

Chain jumpingis normally due to new chain on old casette or visa versa. And Chainsuck due to worn chain or blades or both.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have changed the small front chainring. The chain is new.

Will change front middle chain ring too.

Hope for the best!
