Last night I removed the dials from from my Fox RLC to clean underneath them a bit. The top red one turns a shaft. The second one, blue, turns a shaft that does the lock-out. Now the third one just runs on a ball bearing that makes the clicking noise and another pin that looks like it is just there to limit the turn. The dial does not turn anything.

So, how does it work?

I'm with you Mampara...

I had a long look at the manual when I got mine - and for the briefest moment in time, I actually knew the answer to this...

I THINK(???) it had something to do with the speed of - aw stuff it - I can't remember... :P

Here's the thing though: I did that Fork maintenance workshop with JB about 2 years back - which was about a month after I had just bought the fork. In the process of me doing what you did - without realising it - I lost that teeny little ball bearing...

I've never got round to finding a bb shop to get a replacement - with the effect that my dail now turns slightly, every time I lock-out or release again... It's probably been at the extremes of its turn at various times over the last few years, both ways...

And you know what - never noticed it making the slightest difference...

Mampara, that dial doesn't turn a shaft, it pushes one in. If you look at the back of that dial you'll see a series of indents (called detents) - about six or so. You'll also see a ramped, slot cut in an arch. As you turn the dial, it pushes a spring-loaded pin located in the fork, in further and further.

The detents make the dial click over a fixed ball detent. This ball is not spring loaded. and jsut drops out if it is not rusted in. If it is rusted in, leave it there, at least it won't fall out.

@RodTi, you said you lost one of the small balls. The three small balls live inside the blue lockout ring. They're very hard to come by and cost R18-00 each. Believe it or not. Do you want one?

Thanks JB - I'll take you up on that offer - I'll naturally cover postage too!

I'll open it up over the weekend, and take a pic - if I recall correctly, the 3 balls were different sizes as well (or at least one of them was)... I'm speaking from memory now - just want to be sure which one is missing.

I'll PM you in next week.
